St Annes, the reigning champions of the Furness
Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League
(incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) suffered their first
defeat of the 2010 season as they lost at home to last
season's wooden-spoonists Lancaster at Vernon Road.
Lancaster, a vastly improved side under Michael
Stevens this year earned a 49 runs success that took them up
to sixth as the turn-around point of the season. Inserted by
St Annes captain Andy Kellett the visitors posted 187 for 9
with skipper Stevens (36), pro Roy Silva (50 off 75 balls) and
last season's Second XI captain Craig Atkinson (39 not out)
the main contributors. St Annes pro Dinuka Hettiarachchi
bowled unchanged to take seven for 61.
St Annes lost Atiq Uz-Zaman who was caught
behind by Brendan Hetherington off Iain Perrieman for 6 but
reached 80 for 2 and looked in control. But Nathan Armstrong
was bowled by Tim Barry for 30 and Charles Boucher caught by
Silva off Barry to spark a collapse that saw the home side
lose their last eight wickets for 58 runs.
Off-spinner Ben
Simm bowled superbly to take three for 34 off 19 overs to
supplement Perrieman's three for 56 with Barry taking two for
23 as Lancaster achieved perhaps the season's outstanding
result so far.
Carnforth
pro Gareth Pedder had a fine all round game

Leaders Leyland were unable to take advantage as
bottom club Carnforth battled to salvage a draw from a
high-scoring game at Lodge Quarry. Karl Cross made a
outstanding 109 off 95 balls including 14 fours and four sixes
to provide the backbone of Leyland's 258 for 8 declared.
Cross's fifth wicket stand of 131 with Andrew Makinson, who
hit five fours and four sixes in his 59 off 69 balls gave
Leyland the momentum to call a halt with two overs of their
innings remaining.
Darren Nelson (three for 70) and professional
Gareth Pedder (four for 62) bowled well for Carnforth, Pedder
taking three wickets in his last over while Lee Barnes grabbed
the key wicket of Leyland pro Brett Pelser caught and bowled
for 12 to leave Leyland 92 for 4.Opener Chris Parkinson had
made a fluent 35 off 37 balls.

Carnforth openers Rehman Shah and Ryan Nelson
added 60 in 20 overs to give their side a solid start as
Leyland skipper David Makinson switched his bowlers around.
Neil Dugdale made 35 on his first-team debut before being run
out by Cross and Pedder hit an undefeated 59 off 85 balls
including 12 fours to see Carnforth to maximum batting points
as they closed on 198 for 6. Adam Hornby's 28 included seven
fours.

With Barrow having the day off Blackpool were
the team to benefit most from the afternoon's events as they
earned 12 points from a ten wickets win over Chorley at
Stanley Park.
Paceman Richard Gleeson took four for 31 as
Chorley were dismissed for a disappointing 127, Will Moulton
top-scoring with 34 off 48 balls. Mikey Tidmas grabbed the
prize wicket of Chorley's South African pro JJ Smuts, caught
behind by James Smith for 9 as he took three for 27 while
Steven Mercer celebrated his 30th birthday with two
wickets.
Blackpool openers Alex Smith (73 not out) and John
Mounsey (57 not out) shared an unbroken opening stand of 131
to steer their side through to an emphatic win.
Netherfield completed their second away win in
successive weeks as they beat Morecambe by nine wickets at
Woodhill Lane. Australian professional Nick Kruger hit 74 off
52 balls including six fours and six sixes as Morecambe's
modest 160 was passed in just 23.3 overs. Alex Atkinson
celebrated his call-up to the Cumberland Minor Counties side
with an undefeated 55 and last week's century-maker Ben
Haddrick was 25 not out at the close.
Wicketkeeper Lewis
Edge top-scored for Morecambe with 54 off 108 balls with Phil
Dennison making 31 as Stuart Nixon toiled through 17 overs to
take four for 47 for Netherfield. Skipper Marc Hadwin's three
for 40 and Nathan Chambers' two for 35 were also crucial,
Chambers grabbing the key wicket of Morecambe pro Mandla
Mashimbyi leg before for 5.
Preston, last season's runners-up, began their
game at Fleetwood second from bottom but hinted at better
things to come as they won by 25 runs in a low-scoring game at
Broadwater. Sajid Patel top-scored with 38 in Preston's 159
for 9 as Fleetwood's opening bowler Ryan Smith claimed four
for 55 off 20 overs and Mike Clinning three for 47.
Preston
pro Bilal Asad took four for 34 off 17 overs as Fleetwood were
dismissed for 134 in reply despite an aggressive 51 from Mark
Wilkinson, who hit three sixes. Jonty McDonald followed up his
late-innings 27 with an important spell of three for 20 to
play a fine all-round role in his side's welcome return to
form.
The most dramatic finish of the afternoon was at
Shap Road where Darwen claimed a winning draw against Kendal
as the scores finished level. Teenager Alex Davies hit 46 in
Darwen's 175 for 9 with Neil Cordingley making 38 and skipper
John Cordingley, back after a broken finger 21 not out. Kendal
pro Rosas McMillan took three for 47 while Cumberland County
off-spinner Chris Miller's spell of four for 45 included the
important wicket of Darwen pro Mohammad Zaman Khan, who was
bowled for 27.
Lancashire Academy bowler Yakub Bhamji took
four for 41 and the promising Kamran Anwar three for 40 to
keep Kendal in check. Kevin Howarth was run out off the last
ball of the innings attempting to get home for a second run to
leave the scores tied as the home side closed on 175 for 8.
Howarth top-scored with 42, while opener Jack White made 34
and Terry Hunte 30.
Leyland (played 14-162 points) have a 31-points
lead over Barrow (13-131) with St Annes (13-130) in third.
Blackpool are in close touch in fourth (14-128).
