FURNESS BUILDING SOCIETY ( INCOPORATING 3D SPORTS) NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE

St Annes top at halfway point

By Michael Latham

Warren Quinn leads the amateur bowling stakes

Barrow produced the result of the day in the Furness Building Society Northern Premier League (in association with 3D Sports) on a hot and humid afternoon when several games were rain affected.

Despite being without skipper Daryl Wearing Barrow defeated defending champions Netherfield by seven wickets at Parkside Road.
Barrow's Sri Lankan professional Pasan Wanasinghe took four for 40 off 19 overs as the home side, who have amassed some big scores in recent weeks, were bowled out in the 40th over. 15-year-old leg-spinner Liam Livingstone weighed in with three wickets and Ray Mowat claimed the prize early wickets of captain Chris Parry and Australian pro Glen Batticciotto after Netherfield openers Craig Walmsley and Parry had begun with an quick opening stand of 44.
Teenaged wicket-keeper John Huck provided the main resistance with 42 off 54 balls.

Livingstone then hit 33 off 56 balls in Barrow's reply and the left-handed pair of Jon Miles (43 not out) and deputy captain Chris D'Leny (37 not out) steered their side home in the 37th over.

Last season's leading amateur wicket-taker Ben Simm took a hat-trick for Kendal at Lune Road but the rains came just as the match was boiling up to a fascinating finish.

Off-spinner Simm claimed the wickets of David Heywood, professional Mario Olivier and Billy Akrigg in successive balls, all to catches as Lancaster collapsed to 162 all out.The promising wicket-keeper/ batsman Jamie Hurst (39) and skipper Tim Barry (65) provided the mainstay of Lancaster's total as Ross McMillan and Stuart Parkin also bagged three wicket hauls.
Olivier and BV Rhagavendra each took two scalps as Kendal lost four early wickets in reply and a fascinating duel between opposing South African professionals Olivier and McMillan was developing when a downpour ended play with Kendal 55 for 4.

Morecambe appeared to be getting on top against third-placed Preston when rains ended play at Woodhill Lane and had to settle for a winning draw.
In a consistent batting effort Alex Thistlethwaite (46), Phil Dennison (41) and Lewis Edge (42 not out) were the main contributors to the home side's 210 for 6.
Preston professional and captain Bilal Asad was in imposing form having hit an unbeaten 47 from 50 balls when play was abandoned. But Morecambe professional Mandla Mashimbyi took three for 21 off 11 overs to leave the visitors struggling at 85 for 4.

18-year-old Alex Smith hit his highest division one score as Blackpool reached 232 for 9 before heavy rain during the tea interval ended play for the day at Lodge Quarry.
Smith made 84 off 135 balls while Sri Lankan professional Saj Weerakoon blasted 52 off 48 balls including six fours and three sixes.
Carnforth's left-arm spinner Warren Quinn collected his fifth five-wicket haul of the season, claiming six for 86 off 21 overs in the hot conditions. Quinn is now the highest amateur wicket-taker with 32 victims.

The local derby at Fox Lane was also ruined by the weather as Leyland claimed a winning draw against Chorley.
In a game reduced to 45 overs Leyland battled to 146 against a two-pronged Chorley attack comprising seamers Matt Parry and Jim Lee.
Lee took five for 70 and Parry five for 76 with opener Karl Cross the top-scorer with 37 off 60 balls. A last-wicket partnership of 30 between James Rounding and Matthew Watkinson may well have proved vital had the game run its course. Rounding then trapped Adam Parker leg before and Luis Reece claimed the wickets of Chorley captain Jack Catterall and professional Chris Hartley.
With Leyland pro Ameer Khan bowling Michael Critchley for 19 Chorley were 55 for 4 when an intriguing match was ended by the weather at 6.14pm.

At the halfway stage of the season Chorley trail leaders St Annes by six points.
Andy Kellett's side had the better of a winning draw against Darwen at Vernon Road, but despite a six-wicket haul from left-arm spinner Michael Baer could not force a victory.
Baer, who will be available to St Annes for the rest of the season after completing his university commitments took six for 79, including the prize wicket of South African professional David Wiese trapped leg before for 3, but Darwen closed 209 for 8, 37 runs short of victory.
Darwen's 14-year-old opener Alex Davies (35), Gareth Cordingley (41) and John Cordingley (55 off 39 balls) provided the main resistance.
Earlier Atiq Uz-Zaman (103 off 99 balls including 17 fours) and Stephen Twist (108 off 123 balls with 16 fours) added 190 for the third wicket in St Annes' 245 for 9, Wiese toiling through 21 overs to claim five for 96.
