3D SPORTS NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE

LEYLAND EXTEND THEIR LEAD AT THE TOP

By Michael Latham

3D Sports Northern Premier League leaders Leyland extended their lead at the top to 14 points after their second victory of the Bank Holiday weekend. David Makinson's side demolished the reigning champions for 124 at Fox Lane, the skipper taking four for 47 as the last nine wickets fell for just 48 runs. Atiq-Uz-Zaman provided the main resistance with 57. Karl Cross (50 not out) and Chris Parkinson (55) shared a century opening stand as Leyland cruised to a nine wicket win.

Second placed Kendal had to be content with a winning draw as Netherfield closed well short on 152 for 6 chasing a victory target of 227. Kendal's South African professional Ross McMillan was again in fine form, hitting 73 and then taking 3 for 39. Kevin Howarth and Nick Lewthwaite both just fell short of fifties for Kendal. The Netherfield professional, Callum Ferguson, top-scored with 57 with 15-year-old Graeme Baker making 37.

A spectacular backdrop for the derby at Lune Road

Mark Lomas played a true captain's innings as Morecambe got home by five wickets with ten overs to spare at Lune Road. Lomas hit 68 not out off 107 balls with 10 fours to steer his side to victory after they had lost three early wickets chasing Lancaster's 160. Mike Stevens top-scored with a patient innings of 60 for Lancaster before becoming one of four run-out victims as Lomas also pouched three catches.

Steven Croft made a big impression in his first appearance of the summer for Blackpool, the Lancashire batsman hitting 113 in his side's 229 for 4 and sharing a second wicket partnership of 192 with Luis Reece, who was unluckily run out for 99. Fleetwood stay rooted to the foot of the table after they were dismissed for 116, despite a fighting 43 from opener James Ellis. Blackpool's Sri Lankan professional Sajeewa Weerakon took 6 for 47 and young Blackpool wicket-keeper James Smith snaffled five catches.

Barrow successfully chased down Carnforth's challenging 235 for 5 to earn a welcome five-wicket victory. Professional Pasan Wanasinghe hit 76 (including three sixes and nine fours) and Jonathan Miles 45 before Iain Kermode and Graham Dawson saw the visitors past their target. Earlier Carnforth's South African professional Ryan Bailey hit a majestic 121 not out that included four sixes and 11 fours.

Chorley wicket-keeper Josh Tolley was again in sparkling batting form as his side won batting second for a third successive time. Tolley hit his third consecutive half-century and finished 72 not out as Chorley eased past Darwen's 133. South African fast bowler Friedel de Wet, the Chorley professional, again impressed with a haul of 5 for 29, John Cordingley's 40 providing the main resistance.

Lancaster v Morecambe

DERBY WIN FOR MORECAMBE

Morecambe underlined their title challenge with a hard fought derby victory at Lune Road thanks to a fine captain's innings from Mark Lomas.

Lomas steered his side to victory with a masterly innings of 68 not out after they had slipped to 33 for 3 chasing a modest 161 target.

Morecambe lost openers Vishnal Goyal and Phil Dennison and the experienced Mark Woodhead in quick succession.

Goyal was caught at mid-wicket by Jamie Turton off Daniel Milligan in only the third over.

Woodhead tried to smash Lancaster professional Taufeeq Umar over the top but was caught at mid on by Liam Moffat while Dennison was caught and bowled by Umar as the visitors struggled.

But Lomas steadied the ship and showed his experience to survive a testing spell of bowling, with teenagers Milligan and Mike Stevens both impressing.

Lomas fought an intriguing duel with Stevens who beat him out side the off stump on a number of occasions before coming out on top.

Morecambe professional Bruce Martin gave his captain valuable support and helped take the score to 85 in the 22nd over before holing out to Milligan at long on in Michael Walling's first over.

But Gareth Pedder then assumed Martin's supporting role to perfection, engaging in a match-winning partnership of 56 with Lomas before he was bowled by Stevens.

Tommy Clough came in to hit some firm shots and help Lomas see Morecambe over the finishing line with more than ten overs to spare.

Lomas's 107-ball innings contained ten boundaries.

Earlier, Lancaster had applied the self-destruct button, losing four batsmen to run outs as they fell disappointingly short of a par total on a dry and easy paced wicket.

Both openers fell early, Ryan Nelson slashing Jono Gates first ball to Goyal at backward point and professional Umar bowled middle and off by Pedder.

Tim Barry and Stevens helped repair the damage until Barry departed to the first of Lomas's three catches, pouched at slip after bowler Martin had appeared initially to be appealing for an LBW shout.

Saturday's centurion Jamie Heywood was then the first batsman to be run out, failing to beat Dennison's throw from cover after being sent back attempting a single that was never there.

Stevens batted patiently and with great maturity while the wickets fell around him but could never get on top of an accurate Morecambe bowling attack.

Gates bowled a particularly accurate and hostile spell and deserved more than one wicket for his efforts.

Stevens two-and-a-half hour innings ended when he took on Lewis Edge's arm attempting a second run and was run out for 60, made off 119 balls with seven fours.

Turton and Milligan were also run out in the Lancaster innings which ended two overs short of the full compliment for a disappointing 160.

Martin and Graham Lee each took two wickets and Pedder and Gates one apiece as Morecambe recovered from their mauling in the field by St Annes on Saturday.

The standard of the Morecambe out cricket in the difficult windy conditions was excellent. But Lancaster were impressive in that department as well and fought for every run before an entertaining derby match came to a close just before 7pm.
