BAILEY WITH AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE
Carnforth's South African professional Ryan Bailey inspired his side to a hard earned victory at West Cliff with an outstanding performance with bat and ball.
Though only an occasional bowler at first-class level back home, Bailey's developing off-spin is an important part of captain Adam Hornby's attacking armoury.
Bailey underlined that fact with his first five wicket haul for Carnforth, taking five for 53 in 18 overs as Preston, after winning the toss and electing to bat, were restricted to 183 on a slow-paced wicket.
Bailey then timed his innings to perfection and closed on 90 not out as the visitors reached their target in the penultimate over with six wickets in hand.
Preston were left to rue missed chances in the field, with opener Darren Moore profiting on four occasions while Bailey also survived a sharp chance to first slip in mid innings.
After finishing fifth last year Preston have started the season disappointingly though maybe just need one good result to spark their campaign into life.
Their innings was a strange affair with several home batsmen threatening a big score but failing to deliver.
Openers Bilal Asad and Sajid Patel looked in no trouble as they posted 40 in quick time on a warm and sunny afternoon.

But Bilal Asad, the Preston professional, was caught behind by James Whincup off Adam Cowperthwaite in the 7th over when looking well set.
Joe Davies got a top edge and was snaffled by Bailey in the slip cordon to reward Lewis Bradley for a lively spell and when Lukman Vahaluwala was well caught at second slip by Bailey off Cowperthwaite Preston were in trouble at 56 for 3.
Sajid Patel and Munaf Bavla batted sensibly to take the score past the 100-mark until Patel was deceived by the flight of veteran spin bowler John Denwood and bowled for the top-score of 40.
Patel's dismissal sparked a Preston collapse as Bailey, bowling purposely both over and round the wicket, took four wickets in quick succession to leave Preston 116 for 8.

Munaf Bavla had provided stern resistance but he was caught behind off Bailey for 30 while Jonathan McDonald, Fayaz Ughradar (on debut), and Javaid Hussain mustered three runs between them.
Preston relied on the experienced wicket-keeper Charlie Williams and Paul Mann to set a competitive total.
Mann, batting at no10 after suffering from a migraine, hit five fours and took the score to 156 before he was bowled by Cowperthwaite.
Williams and stand-in captain Rhys Williams then added 27 for the last wicket until the former was adjudged LBW to Bailey for 21 with the last ball of the 48th over, to give Carnforth two extra overs.
Cowperthwaite returned figures of 3 for 54 with Bradley and Denwood, before suffering a calf injury after bowling ten overs, also supporting the professional with a wicket apiece.
Carnforth openers Moore and Bradley gave their side a solid start, posting 31 for the opening stand before Bradley was bowled by Bilal Asad.

Moore and Bailey then batted sensibly but the former was fortunate to escape with two chances to the slips cordon and another two behind the wicket.
Moore had reached 34 in 33 overs when he was bowled by Rhys Williams, in his first over of his second spell, to leave Carnforth 99 for 2.
All now depended on Bailey and in Williams's next over the Carnforth pro survived a sharp chance to Bilal Asad at slip.
There were no more chances offered by the impressive South African as he displayed a solid technique and some well-timed shots all round the wicket.
Carnforth lost Ben Hornby, bowled by Williams for 5 but Tom Barnfield gave valuable support to his professional and helped add 52 for the fourth wicket before being caught by Davies at long off to give the impressive Wiliams his third wicket.
Carnforth had still required 61 off the last ten overs and 28 off the last five but as long as Bailey was there they looked in command.
Captain Adam Hornby helped secure the final 17 runs as Bailey finished 90 not out (including 13 boundaries) with Carnforth reaching their target with eight balls to spare.
