3D SPORTS NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE

AMEER KHAN STEERS LEYLAND HOME

By Michael Latham

3D Sports Northern Premier League leaders Leyland won batting second for the first time this season as they overhauled Barrow's total of 210 for 7 at Fox Lane. Barrow professional Pasan Wanasinghe hit his first century of the season and finished 100 not out (including seven fours and six sixes). But Leyland professional Ameer Khan steered his side to their target with an unbeaten 81 off only 69 balls, including 12 fours and two sixes with good support from Karl Cross 46 and Andrew Makinson 32 not out.

Kendal moved up to second place, just 10 points behind, after veteran all rounder Kevin Howarth collected his first-ever Northern League hat-trick for help bowl out visitors Darwen for 161 chasing Kendal's total of 214. South African professional Ross McMillan top-scored with 93 off 104 balls for Kendal (including seven fours and three sixes) with Darwen professional Atif Ashraf bagging a five-wicket haul. Howarth finished with four for 29, taking the wickets of John Cordingley, Stuart Hampson and Jordan Clarke in successive balls.

Former Pakistan Test wicket-keeper Atiq Uz-Zaman hit the highest score of the season so far, a majestic 157 but reigning champions St Annes had to be content with a winning draw as Morecambe held on with nine wickets down. Uz-Zaman and Adam Taylor 44 put on 173 for the first wicket and the in-form Stephen Twist weighed in with 51 not out as St Annes reached 291 for 2. Morecambe skipper Mark Lomas led the resistance with 51 but despite professional Mansoor Ahmed taking three wickets the last pair of Graham Lee and Jono Gates held out.

Ryan Bailey's superb all-round display led Carnforth to a six-wicket victory at Preston. The South African professional took five for 53 with his off-spin as Preston were dismissed for 183 at West Cliff and then timed his innings to perfection reaching 90 not out as the visitors reached their target in the penultimate over.

Lancaster were frustrated by Luis Reece and Sri Lankan professional Sajeewa Weekakon as Blackpool held out for a draw at Lune Road. Both batsmen hit half-centuries as the visitors reached safety at 186 for 5, well short of Lancaster's 224 for 5 posted earlier in the afternoon. Teenaged batsman Jamie Heywood hit an unbeaten 105 for Lancaster, his first Northern League century, with Pakistan Test batsman Taufeeq Umar, the home professional, adding 64.

Chorley successfully chased a target for the second week in a row, overhauling bottom club Fleetwood's modest total of 141 with six wickets to spare. Josh Tolley steered the visitors home with another impressive innings, making 84 not out with four sixes and five fours after South African professional Friedel de Wet had wrecked the home side's hopes with a fiery spell of six for 48. Adam Parker led the Fleetwood resistance with 47.

Michael Latham's Featured Match of the day

Preston v Carnforth

BAILEY WITH AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE

Carnforth's South African professional Ryan Bailey inspired his side to a hard earned victory at West Cliff with an outstanding performance with bat and ball.
Though only an occasional bowler at first-class level back home, Bailey's developing off-spin is an important part of captain Adam Hornby's attacking armoury.

Bailey underlined that fact with his first five wicket haul for Carnforth, taking five for 53 in 18 overs as Preston, after winning the toss and electing to bat, were restricted to 183 on a slow-paced wicket.

Bailey then timed his innings to perfection and closed on 90 not out as the visitors reached their target in the penultimate over with six wickets in hand.

Preston were left to rue missed chances in the field, with opener Darren Moore profiting on four occasions while Bailey also survived a sharp chance to first slip in mid innings.

After finishing fifth last year Preston have started the season disappointingly though maybe just need one good result to spark their campaign into life.

Their innings was a strange affair with several home batsmen threatening a big score but failing to deliver.
Openers Bilal Asad and Sajid Patel looked in no trouble as they posted 40 in quick time on a warm and sunny afternoon.

But Bilal Asad, the Preston professional, was caught behind by James Whincup off Adam Cowperthwaite in the 7th over when looking well set.

Joe Davies got a top edge and was snaffled by Bailey in the slip cordon to reward Lewis Bradley for a lively spell and when Lukman Vahaluwala was well caught at second slip by Bailey off Cowperthwaite Preston were in trouble at 56 for 3.

Sajid Patel and Munaf Bavla batted sensibly to take the score past the 100-mark until Patel was deceived by the flight of veteran spin bowler John Denwood and bowled for the top-score of 40.

Patel's dismissal sparked a Preston collapse as Bailey, bowling purposely both over and round the wicket, took four wickets in quick succession to leave Preston 116 for 8.

Ryan Bailey took 5 wickets for Carnforth

Munaf Bavla had provided stern resistance but he was caught behind off Bailey for 30 while Jonathan McDonald, Fayaz Ughradar (on debut), and Javaid Hussain mustered three runs between them.

Preston relied on the experienced wicket-keeper Charlie Williams and Paul Mann to set a competitive total.

Mann, batting at no10 after suffering from a migraine, hit five fours and took the score to 156 before he was bowled by Cowperthwaite.

Williams and stand-in captain Rhys Williams then added 27 for the last wicket until the former was adjudged LBW to Bailey for 21 with the last ball of the 48th over, to give Carnforth two extra overs.

Cowperthwaite returned figures of 3 for 54 with Bradley and Denwood, before suffering a calf injury after bowling ten overs, also supporting the professional with a wicket apiece.

Carnforth openers Moore and Bradley gave their side a solid start, posting 31 for the opening stand before Bradley was bowled by Bilal Asad.

Moore and Bailey then batted sensibly but the former was fortunate to escape with two chances to the slips cordon and another two behind the wicket.

Moore had reached 34 in 33 overs when he was bowled by Rhys Williams, in his first over of his second spell, to leave Carnforth 99 for 2.

All now depended on Bailey and in Williams's next over the Carnforth pro survived a sharp chance to Bilal Asad at slip.

There were no more chances offered by the impressive South African as he displayed a solid technique and some well-timed shots all round the wicket.

Carnforth lost Ben Hornby, bowled by Williams for 5 but Tom Barnfield gave valuable support to his professional and helped add 52 for the fourth wicket before being caught by Davies at long off to give the impressive Wiliams his third wicket.

Carnforth had still required 61 off the last ten overs and 28 off the last five but as long as Bailey was there they looked in command.

Captain Adam Hornby helped secure the final 17 runs as Bailey finished 90 not out (including 13 boundaries) with Carnforth reaching their target with eight balls to spare.
