3D SPORTS NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE

LEYLAND LEAPFROG KENDAL AND BLACKPOOL TO THE TOP

By Michael Latham

As the 3D Sports Northern Premier League reached its halfway point Leyland went back to the top of the table courtesy of a 15-point win at while overnight leaders Kendal were rolled over for just 58 at Preston and second placed Blackpool lost at Chorley.

Leyland did what they do best- batting first, amassing a respectable total and then bowling and fielding tightly to secure maximum points. Consistent batting down the order helped total 197 for 7 at , Andrew Makinson top-scoring with 46. Leyland captain David Makinson then took five for 28 as Lancaster were bowled out for 118, pro Ameer Khan following up his innings of 44 with a spell of three for 32.

Kendal were undone by the season's best bowling performance so far, Lukman Vahaluwala taking 8 for 22 at West Cliff to mark his return to his best form after struggling with a shoulder injury. wicket-keeper Charlie Williams claimed five catches as Kendal were dismissed in 21.3 overs. Bilal Asad's 27 not out eased the home side to a seven-wicket win in a match that was completed in just 38 overs.

Blackpool were bowled out for 120 at as fourth-placed battled to secure a four-wicket victory. The visitors never really recovered from Adrian Darlington's run out off the first ball of the innings as 's South African pro Friedel de Wet and veteran spinner Rex Purnell each took four wickets. Opener Luis Reece bolstered 's total with 47. Chorley's talented teenaged wicket-keeper Josh Tolley hit 50- his sixth successive league half century- and put on 61 for the opening stand with Nigel Eastham as the home side got home despite a return of 4 for 41 from 's Sri Lankan pro Seejewa Weerakoon.

Match 1

St Annes v Carnforth

Ryan Bailey continued his outstanding run of batting form with an unbeaten 126 to steer Carnforth to a 12-point victory at the home of the reigning 3D Sports Northern Premier League champions on Saturday.

Ryan Bailey cuts on his way to 126 not out

The 25-year-old South African from Western Province has now scored 595 runs in his last five league innings and been dismissed only once in that sequence. He also scored 142 as substitute professional for East Lancashire in the Lancashire League last weekend.

Bailey's majestic innings, his third century for Carnforth, enabled Adam Hornby's side to reach their challenging victory target of 258 with ten balls to spare. Hornby had set a true captain's lead, opening up with an aggressive innings of 50 that included three sixes- two of them huge blows out of the ground. Despite losing fellow opener Richard Forsyth, who was bowled by Stephen Twist in the fifth over, Hornby gave his side's innings vital early momentum before he was LBW to St Annes professional Mansoor Ahmed.

Carnforth captain Adam Hornby hits Stephen Twist for six

Hornby's dismissal left Carnforth 99 for 2 in the 18th over and was the signal for Bailey to take control.

In partnership with Ben Hornby, who played an important supporting role, the pair took the score onto 171 in the 34th over before Hornby was run out by Seve Hurst's throw following a misunderstanding with Bailey.

Though Tom Barnfield was another LBW victim to the leg-spin of Mansoor Ahmed, Robert Parker kept up the momentum with a brisk 28 in a partnership of 68 for the fifth wicket that helped take Carnforth to the verge of their target.

Bailey, who had passed 50 in the 21st over reached his hundred in the 41st over, made out of 198, and went onto hit 14 fours before fittingly striking the winning runs. With beautifully crafted shots all round the wicket mixed with some aggressive running for singles Bailey looked in complete control.

He did have one anxious moment, almost playing on to Dave Taylor when 50 but other than that rarely played a false shot. Mansoor Ahmed claimed the late wickets of Parker and Lewis Bradley to finish with four for 91.

Earlier St Annes had reached 257 for 8 in their 50 overs.

Former Carnforth player Atiq Uz-Zaman looked set for another large innings before he was brilliantly caught by Adam Cowperthwaite at long leg off Gareth Denwood in the 12th over after an opening partnership of 53 with Adam Taylor.

Sean Bickerdike was bowled by Cowperthwaite and when Taylor fell, another victim of Cowperthwaite's nagging accuracy St Annes were 78 for 3.

Cowperthwaite, who recently represented Cumberland, claimed his third wicket when St Annes professional Mansoor Ahmed was caught by Gareth Denwood at mid on for 21 to leave St Annes 123 for 4 at the halfway point of their innings and finished with 3 for 67.

The talented Stephen Twist played superbly to reach 57 before he was bowled by Bailey's off-spin.

Veteran spinner John Denwood bowled a typically astute spell in tandem with Bailey and finished with 3 for 69 off 14 overs.

Gareth Costin, on his first team debut, batted aggressively for a well-made 27 before he fell to the father and son combination and was caught by Gareth Denwood at long off.

John Denwood also snapped up the wicket of Aiden Cotton, who was caught and bowled for a useful 26.

St Annes looked as if they could be bowled out before their allotted overs before Zaffir Patel and Dave Taylor combined to add an unbroken 39 for the ninth wicket, Taylor hitting an aggressive 29 and Patel finishing 22 not out.

Match 2

Chorley v Blackpool
Another 50 for Tolley as Chorley shock Seasiders

Blackpool CC coach Mike Moore has kindly sent this report of his side's game at Chorley on Saturday:

Our visit to Windsor Park, to take on the emerging talent of Chorley with South African pro. Friedel de Wet the leading wicket taker in the league was always going to be an intriguing challenge.

However it proved to be a bit more than that for Danno`s boys, when asked to bat on a wicket left open to the ravages of our English "summer". The visitors were in trouble immediately. Blackpool`s pre-match team talk had revolved around batsmen building their innings, being positive and rotating the strike to keep the board ticking over.

With that in mind, Adrian Darlington pushed de Wet`s first delivery to mid wicket , called for the run and set off. Non-striker Luis Reece disagreed with this decision and sent his senior partner back. The Chorley fielder raced in from behind square leg and despite a less than accurate throw, Darlo fell just short of his ground. Blackpool 0 for 1 after 1 ball!! Unlucky, Ady.

The Seasiders seemed shocked to a man by that and their batsmen never really got to grips with a very workman-like Chorley attack who made good use of the bowler-friendly conditions. Indeed, Blackpool`s youngsters were a bit like rabbits trapped in the headlights of an on-coming car, as they advanced at snail`s pace. At the 25 over mark Blackpool had crawled to 45 for 2 with opener Reece on 18 not out and number four Jamie Hogarth 13 not out, Alex Smith having earlier been dismissed for 9.

After drinks the tempo increased slightly, but Blackpool`s in form pro Sajeera Weerakoon had to wait until the 36th over to make his entrance. When with the score on 77 Hogarth was dismissed for a hard earned 21, another run out victim. With only 14 overs to go and the scoreboard still remainnig fairly static, the pressure began to tell on Blackpool`s middle order.

Weerakoon (4) Penney (0) & Danson (1) all perished in a vain attempt to up the scoring rate. When Reece was eventually out in the 43rd over for 47 runs, Blackpool were really struggling at 88 for 7.

Luis Reece top scored for Blackpool

Fitness man Michael Moore(17) & Andy Hogarth(7), brought some sense to the proceedings adding 25 for the 8th wicket in under 4 overs. They managed this with some exemplary running between the wickets and some fluent boundary strokes from Moore (2 fours & 1 six).

But Blackpool never recovered from their disastrous start and the innings closed on 120, last man Ben Heath being de Wet`s fourth victim of the afternoon leaving the battling Rick Gleeson stranded on 3 not out.

Friedel de Wet took another 4 wickets for Chorley

I have to say that I was disappointed that all but one of our batsmen failed to try and wrest the initiative from this tight Chorley attack and although veteran spinner Purnell bowled well not one of the Blackpool batsmen attempted to use their feet properly to him to try and unsettle him, preferring instead to play him from the crease.

Three of his victims fell playing injudicious across - the - line shots. All in all a poor batting performance by Blackpool, who must learn to adapt their skills to all different types of batting conditions, not relying on a flattie with the ball coming on to the bat all the time.

In reply, Chorley set off as if they had a train to catch & quickly made inroads into the visitors` meagre total, taking every advantage of the full length bowling on offer from Gleeson (0for 14 in 3 ) & Reece (0 for 35 in 5 ) Josh Tolley (50) & Nigel Eastharn (21 ) put on 61 in quick time before Eastharn became the first of Weerakoon's four victims, brilliantly caught at long on by Darlington.

Josh Tolley hit another 50 for Chorley

The game was always in Chorley`s court after their good, positive start and despite a competitive effort by Weerakoon ( 4 for 41 in 12 ) & 19 year old Jamie Hogarth ( 1 for 7 in 4 ), they ran out easy victors by four wickets with 21 overs to spare. 12 points to Chorley who now move into 5th place with 96 points and just one bowling bonus point for Blackpool, slipping to third with 105, behind Kendal (106 ) and new leaders Leyland (115 ).

Blackpool's pro Saj Weerakoon colllected 4 wickets

I am sure that this developing Blackpool side will identify the parts of their game which require attention and address those needs, sooner rather than later. Structuring an innings, runningbetween the wickets and not allowing the opposition`s attack to completely dominate are some of those areas.
I know that Dann`s boys will bounce back from this reversal, learn from the day`s events and be ready for next weekend, another toughie at home to Carnforth and the prolific run machine pro Ryan Bailey. Plenty to do at nets, fellers. See you Tuesday - Mick
