3D SPORTS NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE

THE LEAD CHANGES AGAIN -
NETHERFIELD BACK ON TOP

Gerry Wolstenholme

By dint of a four-wicket victory over Lancaster on Saturday, Netherfield returned to the top of the 3D Northern Premier League. Previous leaders Kendal turned in one of their less impressive performances and went down by nine wickets to fourth-placed Darwen, dropping to third place in the process, while Morecambe moved up to second place by defeating Leyland by 48 runs at Fox Lane. At the bottom of the table, Carnforth had a welcome win over Blackpool, who were bowled out in just 15 overs for 42.

At Lune Road the weather restricted Lancaster to 42 overs and they made hard work making 110-8 with Michael Walling making 41, Michael Stevens 19 and Tim Barry, batting at number seven, 18 as Charl Langeveldt took 4-51 and Marc Hadwin 3-33. Netherfield struggled to get the victory but in 35.1 overs they achieved success by four wickets as they made 114-6 with Ben Haddrick making 39 not out, Ryan Brown 23 and Langeveldt 15. Tim Barry did his level best to keep his side in the game but his 5-46 was all in vain.

At Shap Road Kendal batted first and with John Trewenneck making 36, Graeme Aldridge making 33 not out, Ben Simm 29 and Terry Hunte 17, they made 147-7 in the 42 overs that the weather allowed them. Best bowling for Darwen was from Gareth Cordingley who took 3-36 and Atif Ashraf took 2-30. Darwen's reply was monopolised by Ashraf who made 95 not out and with Keith Semple making 25 not out, Chris Clarke was the only wicket to fall when he was run out for 27. Darwen's 148-1 gave them a nine-wicket win.

At Stanley Park Carnforth were put in to bat and were bowled out for only 110 with Darren Moore top scoring with 23, Ben Hornby made 19 and Lyndell Richardson 17, as Adam Parker took 5-27 and Andy Armstrong 2-37. Blackpool's reply was a disaster as they made only 42 to lose by 68 runs. Luis Reece made 15 and there were 12 extras! So Blackpool are somewhat stranded at the bottom of the table as Carnforth took 15 points to Blackpool's three.

At Woodhill Lane it was a 46-over contest and Morecambe made 144-7 with Werner Coetsee making 52, Mark Woodhead 23 and Tommy Clough 19 as Ameer Khan took 4-42 and Lawrence Shackleton 2-45. This was enough to give them a 48-run win as Leyland were bowled out for 96 with Matthew Watkinson making 31 from number nine, James Rounding making 20 and Khan 15. Reg Cupit took 5-37 for Morecambe and he was assisted by Coetsee, 3-43, and Graham Lee, 2-14.

The game at Vernon Road between St Annes and Barrow was reduced to a 37-over contest and ended in a draw as St Annes made 210-5 thanks to a belligerent 71 from Ian Austin, 40 from Stephen Twist and a rapid 41 not out from Adam Cotton. Barrow lost early wickets but in the end held out for a draw at 86-8 with Paul Wilcock leading the rearguard action with 31 and he was assisted by 21 from Chris D'Leny and 17 not out from John McMenemy. Austin took 3-10 and Shane Harwood 3-49 for St Annes.

Highlight of the week in the Second Division was a fine 67 from 13-year-old Liam Livingstone for Barrow in their home defeat by St Annes while young Alex Smith of Blackpool had an excellent all-round day with 109 not out and 4-36 as Carnforth were well beaten.
And there were two impressive four-wicket hauls in Morecambe's win over Leyland, Bilal Roosool took his four wickets for just four runs while Warren Quinn bowled 21 overs to return 4-27.

MATCH ACTION

GREAT REARGUARD ACTION BY BARROW EARNS DRAW

Gerry Wolstenholme

Having put St Annes in to bat and then having to face a total of 210-5 made in the reduced 37 overs, Barrow were in serious trouble at 8-4 in the 11th over and then 24-5 in the 13th but a fine rearguard action by the later batsmen, led by Paul Wilcock, ensured that they held out for a draw, finishing at 96-8.

An extremely damp square on a beautifully sunny day prevented a start until 2-30pm but once underway Adrian Darlington, 28, and Gareth Evans, 15, made up for lost time and quickly had 43 on the board before the former, dropped at slip by Robin Adams on five, chipped Justin Quint to wide mid-on where Daryl Wearing showed how it should be done and took the catch. Evans followed at 57 when he drove Ryan Astle to long-on and Wilcock comfortably held the catch.

Ian Austin had an amazing let off when on 11 when he top edged a ball from Quint only to see the ball steeple into the air no more than five yards from the wicket in the backward point area. Adams was underneath it, at least when the ball was in the air, but when it dropped he was unfortunately three yards away and it fell to earth much to the relief of Austin. He capitalised on his good fortune and, although he lost professional Shane Harwood for one when he was caught by the safe hands of Wearing at mid-on off Quint with the total on 71, he blasted seven fours and four sixes in his 71 made from 68 balls. He was eventually fourth man out when, off Iain Kermode, Astle took a superb catch at long-off, diving forward as the bullet-like shot looked like it would fall short. At that point St Annes were 136-4.

Stephen Twist, dropped off a very difficult return catch to Kermode when 27, then hit a quick-fire 40 from 35 balls with one six and five fours before he was adjudged leg before wicket to Kermode at 171-5. The carnage had not finished as Adam Cotton, dropped at long-on by Wilcock when two (the ball flying through the fielder's hands for six) and again off an easier chance to Quint at cover when 10, fired three massive sixes and three fours in his 26-ball 41 not out and at the close Aiden Cotton was seven not out as St Annes totalled 210-5. Quint was the best of the bowlers with 2-42, Astle had 1-43 and Kermode, in the firing line when he bowled his five overs, had 2-57.

The Barrow reply got off to a disastrous start and the total was only one when in the sixth over Adams, one, completed a miserable day when he got the faintest of edges to Austin and Duncan Whalley held the catch. Jonathan Miles could not get Harwood away and, desperate to get off the mark, he pushed the ball to cover, set off for a run that wasn't there, was sent back but Harwood, in his follow through, picked up, returned to Whalley and Miles was short of his crease. That was 1-2 and Miles had failed to score.

As if things could get no worst, Pasan Wanasinghe, with over 700 runs to his name so far, played on to Austin without scoring and that was 1-3. Quint took the total to eight at which point Kermode was bowled by Austin for nought before a stand of 16 followed, riches indeed in view of what had gone before. Quint made most of the runs but was then given out leg before wicket to Harwood when he had made 20 of the 24 runs on the board.

Chris D'Leny and Wilcock then tried desperately to rebuild the shattered innings and, while not scoring freely, at least they stayed at the crease. Whalley had to change his bowling to try to effect a breakthrough but the pair carried on manfully. They took the total to 47 before D'Leny, 21 from 86 balls with three fours, drove Michael Baer straight back down the track and the bowler held the catch. Wilcock then found another ally in John McMenemy and, although the latter was dropped at silly mid-off when the total was 61, they defended doggedly and remained together while the total was raised to 91 at which point Wilcock, 31 from 61 balls with six fours, edged the returning Harwood, who had bowled a few overs of off-spin, to Whalley.

Rob Lightfoot had a testing time against Harwood, bowling quickly again, and when the Australian sent down a short ball, Lightfoot appeared to turn his back on the ball, leaving his bat in the air, and Aiden Cotton gratefully took the looped catch running in from mid-off. Lightfoot had gone without scoring and Barrow, 91-8, were on the verge of defeat. But the resilient Wearing had other ideas and he and McMenemy were able to see out the remaining overs so that Barrow earned an honourable draw with McMenemy 17 not out from 47 balls with four fours, one of them off the final donkey-drop that Harwood sent down, and Wearing was not out nought as Barrow finished on 96-8. Austin finished with 3-10 from 10 overs and Harwood 3-49.
