Match Day 7th July 2007
3D SPORTS NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE
KENDAL GO BACK TO THE TOP
Gerry Wolstenholme
Kendal went back to the top of the 3D Northern Premier League table after an exciting win over Blackpool at Stanley Park. On a track that gave the bowlers much support in the early stages Kendal lost eight wickets for 82 with Terry Hunte's 30 and Ben Simm's quick-fire 24 being the main contributions. Then resistance from Tony Yasin, 56, and Stuart Parkin, 27 not out, doubled the total and Kendal were eventually all out for 167. Richard Gleeson's 3-38 was the best
Blackpool bowling and there were two wickets each for Adam Parker, for 31 runs, Luis Reece, for 17 runs, and Luke Melville, for 22 runs. Blackpool's reply initially went quite well but then as the target approached wickets began to fall as Simm took 4-37 and Blackpool finished seven runs short of the Kendal total, being bowled out for 160. Adam Parker made 41, Luis Reece 38, Justin Kreusch and Stephen Croft 22 each while David Newton nearly won the game for his side with a late 23 not out. There were two wickets each for Kevin Howarth, for 32 runs, and Parkin, for 24 runs.
There wasn't a start until 4-15pm at Parkside Road where visitors Preston made 114-7 in 25 overs with Sajid Patel making 67 from 56 balls with five fours and three sixes but the only support he had came from Munaf Bavla who made 21 not out. Scott Clement and Charl Langeveldt bowled unchanged, the former took 4-59 in 12 overs and the latter 2-51 from 13 overs. All the Netherfield top order got double figures with Chris Parry's 22 being the best effort followed by Ryan Brown who made 14 but extras with 17 were the second top scorer as Netherfield declined to 96-9 as Bilal Asad took 4-37 and Rhys Williams 4-42.
Morecambe took a bold step at Woodhill Lane and declared after 47 overs with 220-2 on the board but the move backfired as Barrow overhauled them and won by one wicket making 221-9 in 47.5 overs. For Morecambe Vishnal Goyal made a top score of 70 and he was aided by 50 from Phil Dennison, 50 not out from Mark Lomas and 44 not out from Werner Coetsee. Tod Bamber took both wickets to fall with 2-36. In the Barrow reply Pasan Wanasinghe dominated and he was there at the end with an undefeated 106 after Jonathan Miles, 22, and Robin Adams, 21, had put on a reasonable opening partnership. For Morecambe Jono Gates took 3-63 and Graham Lee 3-45.
Chorley and Carnforth played out a draw at Windsor Park with Chorley making 205-9 and Carnforth replying with 169-9. For Chorley Stephen John made 55 and Josh Tolley 42 then came extras with 29, Ian Mawdelsey with 25, and Nigel Eastham, batting at number 10, with 20 not out while Irfan Fazil took 3-54, John Denwood 2-39 and Adam Cowperthwaite 2-56. In Carnforth's reply Ryan Nelson made 46, Darren Moore 31, Fazil 24 while Guarav Dhar took 5-77 and John 3-48.
The Fleetwood versus Lancaster and Darwen versus Leyland games were abandoned without a ball being bowled.

MATCH ACTION
KENDAL CONJURE VICTORY FROM THE JAWS OF DEFEAT
Gerry Wolstenholme
An enthralling game at Stanley Park saw visitors Kendal claw their way back into a game that on more than one occasion looked as though it had gone away from them. Batting first they made 167, a noble effort considering that they were 19-4 and later 82-8 and then with Blackpool seemingly in complete control at 70-2 and then nearing victory at 154-7, they struck back and took the last three wickets for the addition of six runs. Blackpool's 160 all out thus gave Kendal a win by seven runs.
Blackpool won the toss and, not surprisingly in view of the dampness of the outfield and the expectation of the bowlers getting some help from the track, put Kendal in to bat. The decision very quickly looked a good one as the visitors lost their first four wickets for 19 runs. In the first over Ikram Ullah, having fended off the first ball from Richard Gleeson, succumbed to the second when, off a spiteful ball, he gloved a looping catch to third slip where Adam Parker dived forward to complete the dismissal. The total had advanced to 16 when Kevin Howarth, seven, chased a widish ball from Gleeson and was caught by Justin Kreusch at first slip.
At this stage, and for some time thereafter, Blackpool employed four slips, a gully, a backward short leg, silly mid-off and had no fielders out in run saving positions. This was because Kendal were finding it very difficult to get the ball away, and this included the imperious Terry Hunte who was playing a very responsible innings in the circumstances. Phil Thornton, two, was the third wicket to fall when he drove at a full pitched ball from Parker only to edge it to Kreusch, who took his second catch at first slip. New Zealand professional Graeme Aldridge did not last long before he was adjudged leg before wicket to Parker before he had scored and Kendal were in the depths of despair at 19-4.
Hunte, who had pulled his first ball for four, and skipper John Trewenneck then began to rebuild the innings and while Hunte kept the scoreboard ticking over, Trewenneck gave him solid support. They advanced the score to 44 before Hunte, an uncharacteristic but worthy 30, was superbly caught by Luke Melville off Luis Reece, the fielder running away from backward point and diving full length to catch the ball as it came over his shoulder.
Paul Dodds came in, made three runs and was then leg before wicket to Kreusch to make Kendal 50-6 and then the momentum began to change as Ben Simm went to the wicket. In the same over as the wicket, he struck three successive balls from Kreusch for four and that made it 62 when Trewenneck, having done the hard work to survive, was the seventh wicket to go down when he somewhat rashly, after having batted so well, hit Luis Reece to Melville at cover.
Simm then got support from Tony Yasin and the former had made 24, from 22 balls with three fours and one six, when Gleeson returned to the attack and bowled him to leave Kendal 82-8. Blackpool still had all their fielders in attacking positions but Stuart Parkin, who always seems to flourish at Stanley Park, and Yasin, dropped by David Newton at point on eight, soon had them spread much wider as they attacked the bowling as the pitch eased.
Paul Danson rotated his bowlers but it made no impression on Yasin and Parkin who looked in complete control as they tried to ensure that Kendal batted out their 48 over allocation, two having been lost to a delayed start. Yasin passed a most valuable half-century and the pair had added 80 runs when Yasin, intent on getting as many on the board as possible, played one adventurous stroke too many and skied a catch to Kreusch off Melville. He had made a fine 56 from 63 balls with two sixes and two fours but the one mistake that he made was to turn and head for the pavilion as he struck the ball and this left Parkin, who had galloped down the track in an effort to cross and thus save exposing last man Chris Miller to the bowling, having to go back to the non-striker's end. It turned out to be a bad move for after Melville bowled a ball that went to the boundary for five wides, he bowled Miller before he had scored and Kendal were all out for a defendable 167 with Parkin left undefeated with an excellent 27. For Blackpool the wickets had been shared with Gleeson taking the honours with 3-38 while Luis Reece had 2-17, Melville 2-22, Parker 2-31 and Kreusch 1-49.
Blackpool's reply started badly and after Luis Reece had taken a couple from the opening over, Charles Boucher was leg before wicket to the ebullient Parkin before he had scored in the second over. Kreusch and Luis Reece, dropped at a wide slip by a diving Hunte early in his innings, then took the total to 33 before the professional, 22, got a leading edge to a ball from Parkin and skied a catch to Miller at cover and that was 33-2. Stephen Croft, being allowed to play his second game of the season for the club by Lancashire, and Luis Reece then put on 37 untroubled runs before a somewhat subdued Croft drove Howarth to Dodds at mid-on and he had gone for 22 with Blackpool then 70-3 and looking as though the game was theirs for the taking.
Kendal had other ideas and when Simm came into the attack the game changed again, just as it had done when he went in to bat. He bowled Luis Reece for 38 at 92-4 and with Howarth having Tom Reece very smartly stumped by Ullah for four Blackpool were suddenly 97-5. Simm then took the sixth, seventh and eighth wickets as he had Danson, five, stumped by the ever-alert Ullah at 104-6, had Craig Outram leg before wicket before he had scored at 110-7 and then, after a frustrating partnership of 44 as far as Kendal were concerned, had Parker, who looked as though he could win the game for Blackpool, caught by Parkin for 41.
Blackpool needed just 14 runs for victory with overs in hand and with Newton looking assured at the crease. However, dropped off a low chance to Ullah, Newton could not keep his partners with him and Gleeson, one, was run out when a throw from Howarth on the boundary beat him as he tried for a second run and then Melville, nought, was also run out as Newton tried to get back on strike as Hunte, from cover, threw down the wicket in a heartbeat with the batsman well our of his ground. This left Newton 23 not out and Blackpool 160 all out defeated by a jubilant Kendal side by seven runs. Simm took the bowling honours with 4-37 and there were two wickets each for Howarth and Parkin, for 32 runs and 24 runs respectively.
Skipper John Trewenneck commented after the game, "It was a great game of cricket and we did extremely well to come back from the positions we were in to win it. We were in trouble at 19-4 and again at 82-8 but our later order batsmen put some respectability into the total. With 167 on the board we felt that we could defend it and we did, thanks to some tight bowling and good fielding at the death. We kept our nerve and were delighted to come out on top. It was a good all-round team effort"
