One of the upsets of the season came about on Saturday at Vernon Road where newcomers Carnforth defeated last year's champions St Annes in a high scoring game. St Annes batted first and totalled a massive 256 all out with Adrian Darlington top scoring with 100 , Adam Griffith making 70 and Ian Austin 44 while Omari Banks took 5-96 and Richard Horsfall 3-28. Carnforth replied with a magnificent 258-4 to win by six wickets with Atiq Uz-Zaman making 135 not out and Quasim Ali 41.
Morecambe meanwhile kept their place at the top of the table thanks to an eight-wicket victory over Preston who batted first and made 187-9 to which Paul Mann contributed 44 and Munaf Bavla 42. Graham Lee took 4-43 for Morecambe and Garnett Kruger 2-62. Morecambe lost two early wickets in reply, Vishnal Goyal and Tommy Clough, and Phil Thornton was dropped early in his innings but then proceeded to take 20 runs from the following four balls as he made his way to an impressive 98 not out and with new skipper Mark Lomas making 73 not out Morecambe cruised home with 191-2.
Darwen maintained second place with a seven-wicket win over Lancaster who could only reach 146-8 from their 50 overs. Luke Phillips made a top score of 57 and David Heywood made 23 as Neil Cordingley proved the best of the Darwen bowlers with 5-37. Darwen's reply revolved around Keith Semple, 55, and Gareth Cordingley who was undefeated with 48 as Darwen reached 147-3.
Terry Hunte made his 38th Northern League century for Kendal who, thanks to his 118 not out, reached 201-7. Fleetwood then started well, faltered and finally collapsed to be 176 all out and lose by 25 runs. Paul Harris top scored with 61 as Dilawar Khan took 5-50 and Ben Simm 4-49.
Netherfield had a comfortable victory over Leyland by 147 runs after they had declared with 226-4 on the board. Craig Walmsley made 106, Simon Little 44 and Grahame Clarke was 38 not out. Peter Lawson then took 5-37 and Marc Hadwin 3-23 as only Brian Tennant with 17 and Simon Dunk with 12 reached double figures in Leyland's 79 all out.
Leyland Motors were the other winners when they defeated Barrow who made a respectable 200 all out with Jonathan Miles making 62 and Ian Allington 40 but they were the only two who could make much headway against the bowling of Ameer Khan who took 8-53. Tom Reece then made 65 not out as Motors reached 206-8 to win by two wickets. Ahmed Amla took 5-99 for Barrow.
The only drawn game of the day came at Windsor Park where Chorley and Blackpool shared 440 runs for the loss of only six wickets and somewhat unusually six different bowlers captured them, Stephen John, Guarav Dhar and Andy Holdsworth for Chorley and Justin Kreusch, Luis Reece and Richard Gleeson for Blackpool. It was Blackpool who batted first and declared at 243-3 with Charles Boucher making 130, Kreusch 53 not out and Steve Mercer 42. Chorley replied with 197-3 with John making 74 not out, Mark Richardson 49 and Michael Critchley 40 not out.

HUNTE THE DIFFERENCE AS KENDAL TRIUMPH
Kendal 201-7, Fleetwood 176
By Gerry Wolstenholme
The mercurial Terry Hunte was the difference between the two sides at Broadwater on Saturday as he made 118 of the Kendal total of 201-7. Even so Fleetwood were at one time in with a chance of victory but they fell away to be all out for 176 to lose by 25 runs.
Kendal won the toss and Ikram Ullah and Kevin Howarth opened the batting and they took the total to 30 before the latter was caught at slip by Paul Harris off Tom Blundell for 17. Ullah, in an uncharacteristic innings of 57 balls that contained only one boundary, went on to make 21 before Fish caught him off Harris at 52-2. Fish then trapped Kabir Khan leg before wicket and it was 52-3. John Trewenneck had failed to score when James Ellis smartly stumped him off Fish and that was 64-4.
Then came a partnership of 90 runs between Hunte and Gareth Ashburner who played his part admirably in getting the strike to his partner and keeping the scoreboard ticking over at the same time. He made 19 of the runs before he played Blundell straight to Fish at point and it was 154-5. David Fallows quickly holed out to Adam Sharrocks before he had scored and that was 160-6 and it was 165-7 when Tony Yasin was caught by John Wright off Blundell for four.
Hunte then found another valuable ally in Ben Simm who played a similar role to that of Ashburner. He saw Hunte to his 38th Northern League century and was undefeated with 13 at the close but it was Hunte who took the honours with a superb 118 not out made from 137 balls with two sixes and 12 fours, one of them the shot of the day when he swept Harris effortlessly in front of square, the ball racing to the boundary before any fielder could move. So Kendal closed on 201-7, a good total on a track that posed some problems for the batsmen. Blundell took 3-57, Fish 2-32 and Harris 2-63.
Ellis and Michael Dewhurst opened for Fleetwood and it was the former who did most of the scoring and he had made 14 when he was half forward to Howarth only to edge to Ullah behind the stumps and that was 23-1. Michael Clinning and Dewhurst put on 44 for the second wicket before Ullah claimed his second victim, stumping Clinning for 20 off the leg spin of professional Dilwar Khan. The two Khans, Kabir and Dilawar, then combined to dismiss Dewhurst as the batsman pulled a long hop from Dilawar straight to a grateful Kabir at mid-on and he had gone for 28 at 71-3.
Harris and Wayne Clarke then put on the best partnership of the innings and took Fleetwood to 131 with plenty of overs left to make the remaining 71 runs for victory. But at that point Clarke, 16, pulled Simm to mid-wicket where Fallows leapt high and took an overhead catch. Adam Sharrocks made eight as the total rose to 156 with six wickets still in hand but then, apparently crease-bound, he was stumped by Ullah off Dilawar Khan.
That was the beginning of the end for Fleetwood as the remaining five wickets went down for just 20 runs in 6.1 overs. Wright, one, was caught at deep mid-wicket by the diving Howarth off Dilawar Khan at 162-6, Zac Taylor, six, was caught by a diving Fallows at mid-wicket off Simm at 172-7 and Simm bowled Blundell first ball with one that kept very low to make it 172-8.
The same bowler then put the game out of Fleetwood's reach by bowling Harris who tried to work the ball to leg and lost his leg stump and that was 176-9. The Fleetwood professional's runs came from 56 balls with two sixes and five fours. Fish kept out the rest of the over but could only watch from the non-striker's end as Dilawar Khan bowled Steve Hill, three, with his well-disguised quicker ball, the doosra they would have called it on television, and Fleetwood were all out for 176 and had lost by 25 runs.
Dilawar Khan took 5-50 in two spells of fine leg spin bowling and Simm had 4-49.
