Match Day 8th July 2006

RAIN RUINS COMPLETE PROGRAMME

By Gerry Wolstenholme

Rain ruined the entire First Division Northern Premier League programme on Saturday with only three games going to a second innings and all of those ended prematurely.

The game that did get two teams to the crease was Leyland versus Darwen at Fox Lane where the home side batted first and made 176-6 with Chris Parkinson making 49, Alex Mercer 43 and Adam Parker 41 as Andrew Cook took 2-22 and Andrew Mercer 2-36. Darwen's rely was curtailed at 57-2 with Gary Jackson out for 28 and Keith Semple not out 16.

There was time for Ahmed Alma to make another century at the Ernest Pass Memorial Ground where Barrow made 221-5 to which Todd Bamber contributed 33 and Iain Kermode 20 while Gareth Pedder took 4-51 for Morecambe.

There was also time for Ian Austin to make his second successive century for St Annes who had made 247-7 when the rains came. Austin's 105 was the top score with Duncan Whalley making 41 and Gareth Evans 40 as Leyland Motors' David Makinson took 4-80.

Ikram Ullah was another centurion with 129 at Shap Road against Blackpool where Kendal made 214-5 before declaring after the 45th over. Terry Hunte made 21, Kevin Howarth 18 and Tony Yasin 13 not out, as Paul Danson was the best of the Blackpool bowlers with 3-55. Blackpool faced just four balls before the weather closed in without a run or wicket on the board.

Stephen John bowled Carnforth out for 112 at Windsor Park with 5-22 as Guarav Dhar chipped in with 3-29 while Quasim Ali made 34 and Adam Hornby 22. Chorley had 14 without loss on the board when rain stopped play.

Michael Clinning was in form for Fleetwood with 69, Zac Taylor made 55 and departing for Warwickshire Paul Harris 30 as Fleetwood made 224-6 against Lancaster for whom Jannisar Khan took 3-75 and Graham Barnes 2-81.

Netherfield were the day's biggest scorers with 248 for seven declared against Preston at West Cliff but once again they were unable to capitalise on their effort. No details are yet available.

MATCH ACTION

ULLAH'S CENTURY IN VAIN

Kendal 214-5 dec, Blackpool 0-0
By Gerry Wolstenholme

Ikram Ullah's highest league score for Kendal, 129, came in vain at Shap Road on Saturday for after Blackpool had received just four balls in reply without runs or losing any wickets the rain became too persistent to continue and the match was eventually abandoned after Kendal had posted 214-5 declared.

Ullah and Kevin Howarth opened in the form that they have shown for the last few weeks and it looked as though Blackpool would not achieve a breakthrough. The pair had put on 42 without any difficulty but Howarth then top edged Justin Kreusch to Mike Taylor at deep mid-wicket and he had gone for 18 at 42-1.

Terry Hunte arrived and opened with a boundary but he perished when he had made 21 when he placed Paul Danson into Michael Moore's hands at backward point and Kendal were 91-2. Danson struck twice more when he bowled Gareth Ashburner for four as the batsman made no stroke and then had Kabir Khan caught by Moore once again at backward point with the wickets falling at 120 and 151 respectively.

Meanwhile Ullah continued on his merry way, escaping a vigorous appeal for a catch at the wicket and escaping a run out chance when he had made 54. He reached his century and continued to score freely until he drove the returning Luis Reece, whose opening spell had been impressive, fiercely to Kreusch at mid-wicket. His 129 came from 146 balls and contained 21 fours and on his dismissal Kendal were 199-5.

There was just time for David Fallows to reach eight not out and for Tony Yasin to nonchalantly straight drive what turned out to be the final ball of the innings for six to reach 13 not out before Kendal declared at 214-5. Danson who had 2-33 from his first 10 overs finished with 2-55 from 12 while Reece had 1-26 and Kreusch 1-66.

Two appeals against David Newton from Khan were all the happenings in the Blackpool reply before the umpires took the players from the field. And by 5-40 there was no let up and the captains agreed to shake hands and settle for the match being abandoned.
