St Annes completed a notable double over second placed Netherfield and with Blackpool winning it meant that the runners-up place in the league was still there for the taking especially as Blackpool and Netherfield clash in the final game next Saturday. A draw for Morecambe meant that at best they can finish in third place.
Netherfield batted first at Parkside Road and scored 163-9 with Grahame Clarke making a top score of 54, Pierre de Bruyn making 27, Tommy Prime 20 and Craig Walmsley 19 as Shane Harwood took his season's tally to 97 wickets with 4-50 and there was 2-34 for Ian Austin and 2-24 for Michael Baer. St Annes made hard work of the victory and it was 73 not out by Harwood that earned them a three-wicket win with 169-7. Austin made 26 and Stuart Nixon took 2-18 and Marc Hadwin 2-59.
Blackpool meanwhile polished off Preston at Stanley Park where the visitors batted first and made 186-6 with Mario Ventura making an unbeaten 113, Paul Mann scoring 29 and Richard Dixon 22 while Tim Barry, bowling unchanged, took 4-75. Blackpool then had 52 overs in reply and at one time were in danger at 121-4 but an unbeaten stand of 66 by Barry, 43 not out, and Robin Bracewell, 30 not out, saw them home by six wickets with 187-4. Steven Croft made 45 and Ventura took 2-38.
Fleetwood won easily at Broadwater against Leyland Motors who batted first and made 190-7 with 79 from Atif Ashraf, 35 from Tom Reece and 26 from Andrew Makinson. Stand-in professional Mahendra Nagamootoo took 3-46. John Wright in his final game as captain put on 91 with Mark Emsley who made 47. Andrew Clough made 30 but Wright was the star with a thrilling 94 as Fleetwood won by five wickets with 194-5.
It was a high-scoring game at Lune Road where Lancaster and Kendal shared 475 runs with the Cumbrians coming out on top with their 238-3 that eclipsed Lancaster's 237-8. Substitute professional S Sheikh scored 101 for Lancaster from 158 balls, Ian Parkinson made 36 and Jamie Heywood 25 as Kabir Khan took 3-83 and David Fallows 2-34. The irrepressible Terry Hunte then replied with 113 not out from 126 balls with 18 fours and Khan made 79 as the pair put on 176. Kevin Howarth finished with 20 not out and Liam Moffatt took 2-46 for Lancaster.
The game at Leyland was over long before tea as the home side were dismissed for just 48 with Paul Busby making half the runs and being followed by Brian Tennant with nine and Nathan Pearson with eight. There were seven batsmen who failed to score, one of them not out, as Tom Smith took 5-13 and Billy Smith 3-26. Tom Smith then made 38 not out as Chorley cruised home by nine wickets with 58-1, the one wicket going to Steve Pallett at a cost of 24 runs.
The only draw of the day in either division came at Barrow where Morecambe were the visitors. Barrow scored 203-4 with Jonathan Miles making a top score of 61, assisted mainly by Rawl Lewis with 49 and Ian Allington with 36. Morecambe replied with 168-5 with Mal Maketa making 56 and Phil Dennison finishing with 67 not out and these two were followed by Gareth Peddar and extras, both totalling 13. Daryl Wearing took 2-48 for Barrow.
