ST ANNES DO DOUBLE OVER NETHERFIELD -
RUNNERS-UP SPOT STILL UP FOR GRABS

By Gerry Wolstenholme

St Annes completed a notable double over second placed Netherfield and with Blackpool winning it meant that the runners-up place in the league was still there for the taking especially as Blackpool and Netherfield clash in the final game next Saturday. A draw for Morecambe meant that at best they can finish in third place.

Netherfield batted first at Parkside Road and scored 163-9 with Grahame Clarke making a top score of 54, Pierre de Bruyn making 27, Tommy Prime 20 and Craig Walmsley 19 as Shane Harwood took his season's tally to 97 wickets with 4-50 and there was 2-34 for Ian Austin and 2-24 for Michael Baer. St Annes made hard work of the victory and it was 73 not out by Harwood that earned them a three-wicket win with 169-7. Austin made 26 and Stuart Nixon took 2-18 and Marc Hadwin 2-59.

Blackpool meanwhile polished off Preston at Stanley Park where the visitors batted first and made 186-6 with Mario Ventura making an unbeaten 113, Paul Mann scoring 29 and Richard Dixon 22 while Tim Barry, bowling unchanged, took 4-75. Blackpool then had 52 overs in reply and at one time were in danger at 121-4 but an unbeaten stand of 66 by Barry, 43 not out, and Robin Bracewell, 30 not out, saw them home by six wickets with 187-4. Steven Croft made 45 and Ventura took 2-38.

Fleetwood won easily at Broadwater against Leyland Motors who batted first and made 190-7 with 79 from Atif Ashraf, 35 from Tom Reece and 26 from Andrew Makinson. Stand-in professional Mahendra Nagamootoo took 3-46. John Wright in his final game as captain put on 91 with Mark Emsley who made 47. Andrew Clough made 30 but Wright was the star with a thrilling 94 as Fleetwood won by five wickets with 194-5.

It was a high-scoring game at Lune Road where Lancaster and Kendal shared 475 runs with the Cumbrians coming out on top with their 238-3 that eclipsed Lancaster's 237-8. Substitute professional S Sheikh scored 101 for Lancaster from 158 balls, Ian Parkinson made 36 and Jamie Heywood 25 as Kabir Khan took 3-83 and David Fallows 2-34. The irrepressible Terry Hunte then replied with 113 not out from 126 balls with 18 fours and Khan made 79 as the pair put on 176. Kevin Howarth finished with 20 not out and Liam Moffatt took 2-46 for Lancaster.

The game at Leyland was over long before tea as the home side were dismissed for just 48 with Paul Busby making half the runs and being followed by Brian Tennant with nine and Nathan Pearson with eight. There were seven batsmen who failed to score, one of them not out, as Tom Smith took 5-13 and Billy Smith 3-26. Tom Smith then made 38 not out as Chorley cruised home by nine wickets with 58-1, the one wicket going to Steve Pallett at a cost of 24 runs.

The only draw of the day in either division came at Barrow where Morecambe were the visitors. Barrow scored 203-4 with Jonathan Miles making a top score of 61, assisted mainly by Rawl Lewis with 49 and Ian Allington with 36. Morecambe replied with 168-5 with Mal Maketa making 56 and Phil Dennison finishing with 67 not out and these two were followed by Gareth Peddar and extras, both totalling 13. Daryl Wearing took 2-48 for Barrow.

MATCH ACTION

WRIGHT LEADS FLEETWOOD HOME IN A CANTER

Leyland Motors 190-7, Fleetwood 194-5

By Gerry Wolstenholme

In his final League game as skipper John Wright led from the front with a fine 94 that helped his side to victory by five wickets over Leyland Motors at Broadwater where the visitors found their 190-7 from 52 overs comfortably overhauled by 194-5 made in only 38 overs.

Winning the toss and batting Motors made a dreadful start as Karl Cross was caught behind by James Ellis off Steve Hill in the first over without a run on the board. The Fleetwood duo combined again when the total was 11 as James Aspinwall went the same way for four. Then came a stand of 50 by Atif Ashraf, who made batting look very simple, and David Makinson before the latter was leg before wicket to Dave Fish for 17. Ashraf and Tom Reece then put on 75 in 59 minutes as Fleetwood rotated their bowling, using six bowlers during the innings. Surprisingly, for he had been in no difficulty whatsoever, Ashraf was the first to go when he lofted Adam Breakell to Adam Sharrocks at a widish long-on and he was gone for 79 made from 103 balls with 10 fours, many of them stylishly flicked to the leg-side boundary. Motors were then 136-4.

Mahendra Nagamootoo then slowed the scoring down with an impressive spell of leg spin bowling and it was he who captured the final three wickets to fall. Andrew Clough at deep mid-wicket caught Reece for an excellent 35 at 158-5 and in the same over and at the same total he bowled Peter Cummings who was trying to accelerate the scoring by swinging to leg but instead he lost his middle stump. Andrew Makinson then impressed with a quick 26 before Ellis stumped him off the final ball of the innings and with Alan Richardson not out three, Motors finished on 190-7. Nagamootoo finished with 3-46 from 13 overs, Hill had 2-31 and there was one wicket each for Fish and Breakell, for 21 and 38 runs respectively.

The Fleetwood innings got off to an excellent start with Wright and Mark Emsley putting on 91 in an hour. Both played some magnificent shots but Emsley outscored his skipper and when he was out, bowled by Ashraf, he had 47 of the total. Wright and Clough then carried on the good work and put on 84 in 49 minutes before Wright, in no trouble throughout his innings and deserving a century, was trapped leg before wicket to Cummings and his was the first of three wickets to fall with the total unmoved on 175.

Cummings trapped Sharrocks leg before wicket first ball of the final ball of the over and the first ball of the following over Clough had a rush of blood and holed out to David Makinson at mid-off off the seventh bowler introduced into the attack, Aspinwall, for 30. The alarms hadn't quite finished as Nishat Afsar caught Nagamootoo at mid-wicket from a poor shot when the professional had made only three and that was 184-5. However James Ellis, 14 not out, made sure of the Fleetwood victory with Tom Wilson standing firm at the other end as Fleetwood won with 194-5. Aspinwall had a nice little spell of four overs that brought him 2-12, Cummings had 2-40 and Ashraf 1-33.

Skipper Wright commented, "It was good to go out with a win. The boys bowled well and we had a good start with Mark Emsley flourishing in the openers role. On a personal note, it would have been good to score a century on my final League appearance as captain but the main thing is that we won - and won comfortably."
