Match Day 17th July 2005

FLEETWOOD MOVE BACK TO THIRD
BUT ... NO CHANGE AT THE TOP

By Gerry Wolstenholme

Fleetwood's win over Barrow at Broadwater moved them back into third place as Morecambe did not have a game but with wins for St Annes and Netherfield nothing changed at the top of the table.

Netherfield rolled over Chorley with relative ease as they dismissed them at Windsor Park for just 116 as Michael Critchley top scored with 25 and Neil Bannister made 17. For Netherfield Scott Clement took 4-28 and Marc Hadwin 3-22. Craig Walmsley then completed an excellent weekend with 100 less than he had made the previous day but his 71 not out was the backbone of the Netherfield reply of 117-1 to which Grahame Clarke, now past 20,000 League and Cup runs, contributed 28 not out.

St Annes allowed Leyland Motors to total 237-6 with Atif Ashraf making 100 and James Aspinwall 58 but then they won by three wickets at 238-7 with Russ Bradley making 53 not out including the winning six with three balls remaining. Other run-makers for St Annes were Adrian Darlington, 38, Steve Twist 37, Joe Davies 31, Gareth Evans 30 and Shane Harwood, who also took 3-53, 29.

At Fleetwood, Barrow were late arriving due to traffic problems so had only 48 overs in their innings and they made a modest 164-8 with Iain Kermode top scoring with 55 and Daryl Wearing making 29 with a late onslaught. Steve Hill took the bowling honours for Fleetwood with 3-37. Doug Watson made a sparkling 63 with 12 fours in Fleetwood's reply and with Rob Clark, 27 not out, and Michael Clinning 24, Fleetwood won by five wickets at 167-5.

Kendal made up for their disappointment of Saturday with a win over Darwen. They totalled 228-7 with runs from Kabir Khan, 67, Terry Hunte, 49, and Ikram Ullah, 40, as Andrew Mercer proved the best of the Darwen bowlers with 3-61. But despite 98 from Gareth Cordingley and 40 not out from brother Neil, Darwen fell for 195 to lose by 33 runs as David Fallows was the bowling hero with 5-42 and Khan took 4-72.

At Lune Road Lancaster lost to Blackpool who completed an excellent weekend with their second win, the only side with a one hundred per cent record over the two days. The weakened home side made 159-8 with David Heywood top scoring with 54 and Yasim Bari making 23 as Tim Barry took 4-43 and Steven Croft 2-44. In Blackpool's reply Justin Kreusch made 65 not out, Charles Boucher 30 and Tim Barry 31. At one stage it was Bari bowling to Barry and the Blackpool man struck his namesake Yasim for two sixes as the Lancaster professional took 2-79 from just nine overs.

Leyland made 132 at Fox Lane with Simon Dunk making a top score of 38 and the evergreen Charlie Williams making 34 not out as the welcome return of Manoj Parekh saw that wily campaigner take 5-41 for Preston. Mario Ventura and Ian McDonnell then both made 63 not out as Preston coasted home by nine wickets at 136-1.

MATCH ACTION

FLEETWOOD SEE OFF BARROW
THANKS TO HILL AND WATSON

Barrow 164-8, Fleetwood 167-5

By Gerry Wolstenholme

A magnificent spell of fast bowling by Steve Hill in which he removed three of the Barrow top order and a scintillating half-century from professional Doug Watson were the main contributions to Fleetwood's five-wicket victory over Barrow at Broadwater on Sunday. However it was an all-round team effort that saw Fleetwood to victory as Hill was well supported by the other bowlers and Michael Clinning and Rob Clark played good supporting innings to Watson. Barrow's 164-8 from their reduced 48 overs due to their late arrival was easily matched by Fleetwood who made 167-5 from 39.4 overs in reply.

Ian Allington had no hesitation in batting when he won the toss and he opened with Dean Williams who got the scoreboard moving with a boundary. Allington then got an edge to third man for four but in the same over he got a peach of a ball from Hill that came back on him, took an inside edge and James Ellis made a stupendous catch diving a long way, low to his left and Barrow were 8-1 with the skipper gone for four.

Rawl Lewis, fresh from 121 not out the previous day, was beaten first ball by one that missed bowling him by a coat of varnish but he did not profit as, before he had scored, he edged Hill and Ellis took his second catch and that was 12-2. Dean Williams played a number of super drives through extra cover but when he had made 22 he was the third Barrow wicket to fall, Adam Breakall trapping him leg before wicket to leave Barrow on 51-3.

Hill struck for a third time when he had Mike Hughes leg before wicket for seven and it was 62-4 before Iain Kermode and Tod Bamber struck up a partnership that took Barrow close to 100. Both batted sensibly with Kermode the more prolific of the two and he struck boundaries off both spinners, Michael Clinning and Andrew Clough. The partnership was broken at 98 when Bamber, 21, struck Clinning to long-on where the safe hands of Doug Watson awaited. Kermode went on to score a fine first senior half century but on 55 he holed out to Tom Blundell at long-on from the bowling of Clough and that was 113-6.

Rob Lightfoot made 17 before Watson, diving low at short mid-wicket took his second catch once again off the bowling of Clinning and it was 130-7. Daryl Wearing then enlivened the closing stages with a cameo innings of 25 balls that made him 29 runs including two massive, well struck sixes and one four. He was out to the final ball of the innings when he charged down the track to Clough to be stumped by a country mile and with Steve Glasgow not out eight, Barrow's innings closed at 164-8. Steve Hill's impressive opening 16-over spell brought him 3-37 while Clough and Clinning both had 2-38 and Breakall 1-23 from seven tidy overs.

Fleetwood's reply got off to a sparkling start with Watson driving boundaries all round the ground, one coming from the first ball and another from the third ball of the innings, and he had six fours by the time his score had advanced to 25. He and John Wright put on 47 for the first wicket before Wright, 18, caught a ball on the top of the bat and put it in the air towards mid-wicket where Kermode leapt splendidly to hold a one-handed catch off the whole-hearted bowling of Wearing.

Ellis hit one four and then offered no stroke to Wearing and found his stumps rearranged at 58-2. Watson meanwhile carried on his merry way and his placement of the ball was magnificent as he found the boundary with consummate ease and he had scored the majority of the 42 runs added for the third wicket when Adam Sharrocks, nine, was beaten and bowled by Lewis at 93-3. Watson went on to make 63 with 12 fours but from his 78th ball he was adjudged caught behind the wicket by Williams off Lewis and Fleetwood were 102-4.

Clinning played one of those cameo innings for which he is renown and, like Watson, struck the ball sweetly to the boundary before he received a shooter from the returning Wearing and was leg before wicket for 24 at 130-5. His was the final wicket to fall for Rob Clark, bowled by a Lewis no-ball before he had scored, played as had Watson and Clinning before him and struck the ball clinically to the boundary, indeed in one Wearing over he hit a glorious straight drive for four, pulled another to the boundary and then fired one through extra cover for four. He was 27 not out from 44 balls at the close and Clough was 12 not out as Fleetwood won comfortably with 167-5. Wearing took 3-55 and Lewis 2-33.
