Match Day 11th June 2005
THE ST ANNES BANDWAGON ROLLS ON -
AND BARROW BOUNCE BACK
By Gerry Wolstenholme
There seems to be no stopping League leaders St Annes as they comprehensively defeated neighbours Fleetwood at Broadwater on Saturday but chasing Netherfield, Darwen and Blackpool also won to keep the pressure on Ian Austin's side. And Barrow bounced back from their low total last week to record a six-wicket victory over Leyland Motors at the Ernest Pass Memorial Ground.
St Annes bowled first on a track that was a little soft and run-making was none too easy. John Wright made 15 but the backbone of the innings once again came from professional Doug Watson who made 98 not out, the second time that he has carried his bat only to fall short of the coveted century. Adam Sharrocks made 45 as Fleetwood closed on 183-5 with the League's leading wicket-taker, Shane Harwood, restricted to 1-44 and Steve Twist taking 2-54. The Fleetwood total presented no problems for St Annes and Adrian Darlington, 65, and Gareth Evans, 78 not out, put on an opening partnership of well over 100 before Harwood, with two sixes and four fours in his 34 not out, put the finishing touches to an eight-wicket victory at 185-2.
Netherfield batted first at Fox Lane and made a formidable 231-4 with Grahame Clarke back to his big hitting form as he blasted 84. Pierre de Bruyn contributed 46 and Chris Parry made a fine 57 not out. Leyland failed to make much impact on the Netherfield total and were bowled out for just 77, to lose by 154 runs with Gibhirdi top scoring with 24 not out. Marc Hadwin took 3-23, Nick White 2-8 and there were wickets for Ryan Wilson, Russell Miller and de Bruyn.
Blackpool made short shrift of Kendal at Stanley Park where the visitors totalled 167-9 with 42 from Kevin Howarth and 41 from Kabir Khan while Tim Barry took 4-42. Blackpool lost two early wickets but then Steven Croft, 68, and Justin Kreusch, 77 not out, put on 144 that led to Blackpool's seven-wicket victory at 168-3.
Lancaster went down at Lune Road where Darwen were victorious by seven wickets as the home side, indebted greatly to David Heywood's 85 not out, made 170-8 with Ian Parkinson making 31 and Ben Simm 25 while Keith Semple took 3-56. Semple then scored 71 not out and Gareth Cordingley 66 as Darwen cruised to victory with 174-3.
Ian Allington led his Barrow side to a most welcome victory over Leyland Motors when he scored 84 out of 183-4 in which Rawl Lewis made 39 not out and Dean Williams 15. This gave them a six-wicket victory as they successfully chased Motors' 182 all out with Faisel Patel top scoring with 34, Atif Ashraf making 28 and Peter Lawson taking 5-59 and Iain Kermode 3-32.
Morecambe and Preston drew at West Cliff where the visitors made 233-6 with Mal Maketa making 71, Phil Dennison 47, Gareth Peddar 43 and Mark Orchard 39 while Andrew Miller took 3-40 for Preston. Paul Mann then anchored the Preston innings and prevented his side from losing with a fighting 70 not out from the opening spot and Lukman Vahaluwala making 32 and Ian McDonnell 29 as Wayne Quinn took 4-50 and Tommy Clough 2-29.

MATCH ACTION
IT'S ALL TOO EASY FOR BLACKPOOL
Kendal 167-9, Blackpool 168-3
By Gerry Wolstenholme
Kendal's trips to the Fylde Coast so far this season have been unproductive, this was their third visit and their third defeat. But it was not only the defeat that was disappointing, it was the manner in which it was inflicted for the Cumbrian side as Blackpool completely outclassed their rivals, so much so that not only were there seven wickets to spare at the end, there were also 19 of the 52 overs unused. Kendal were put in to bat, laboured to make 167-9 in their 52 overs and then bowled far too loosely to put a stop to the rampant Blackpool batsmen and towards the end of the innings, the fielding became decidedly sloppy so that Blackpool won in a canter by seven wickets at 168-3.
Initially Kendal, in the form of Ikram Ullah and Simon Little, looked in no trouble, that is until Ullah was adjudged leg before wicket to Chris Taylor when he had made 16 of the 26 runs on the scoreboard. One run later Little, six, was also back in the pavilion when he was caught behind by David Baker off Steven Croft. Terry Hunte played one majestic cover drive but the mercurial Tim Barry then bowled him for nine as Hunte swung rather wildly across the line. However, he was a trifle unlucky for it was the seventh ball of the over and Kendal were perilously placed at 51-3.
Kabir Khan and Kevin Howarth set about the recovery and they did a good job, so much so that Paul Danson had to quickly rotate his bowlers at the south end while Barry wheeled effortlessly away at the north end. The Kendal pair put on 69 runs and looked as though they would stay together to take their side to respectability but Barry had other ideas and he trapped Khan leg before wicket for 41, made from 90 balls with five fours, at 120-4. In the same over Baker dropped Oliver Killiner before he had scored but it was Howarth, 42 from 66 balls with five fours, who was the next to go. He unnecessarily played an uncharacteristic shot to Charles Boucher and was caught by Chris Taylor at wide mid-wicket and Kendal were 138-5.
Jamie Rafferty and young Killiner then made a determined effort to raise their side's total but both fell at the same total, 150. Barry bowled Rafferty for eight and Killiner, trying to force the pace, was caught straight down the ground by Justin Kreusch for nine. A third wicket then went down at 150 when Danny George was drawn forward by Barry for Baker to stump him. There was just time for one defiant blow from Stuart Parkin, who spoiled Barry's superb figures a little with a huge six into the pavilion, before he was run out for nine off the final ball of the innings. This left Damien Gudgeon nine not out and Kendal 167-9 from their 52 overs with Barry, bowling unchanged throughout, returning excellent figures of 26-11-42-4. Boucher had 2-25, Chris Taylor 1-20 and Croft 1-26.
Blackpool's reply began disastrously as Kendal reached their peak within the first 10 overs. Howarth at second slip made a superb diving catch to dismiss Boucher for three from the bowling of Rafferty and Barry, having driven his first ball exquisitely through the covers for four, failed to add to his total and was caught by Gudgeon off Khan. This left Blackpool at 14-2 and Kendal thinking that they were in with a chance of getting something out of the game.
However such thoughts were soon dissipated as Croft and Kreusch, both batsmen in form, embarked on a match-winning partnership of 144 in 106 minutes with both of them despatching the far too frequent bad balls to the boundary. There were a couple of alarms when Croft could have been stumped off Miller when he had made 38 but the ball squirted low past a partially unsighted wicketkeeper and he had another escape on 43 when Howarth, this time at first slip, was unable to hold on to a diving catch to his left.
With the game almost won, Croft played a somewhat lazy shot to Miller and only succeeded in finding the safe hands of Hunte at square leg and he was gone for an excellent 68, made from 101 balls with one six and 12 fours, that left Blackpool at 158-3. Steve Mercer made one not out but Kreusch finished with a powerful 77 not out made from just 81 balls with an amazing 17 boundaries, most of them struck majestically through the off-side as Blackpool clinched a handsome victory by seven wickets at 168-3.
