Match Day 10th July 2004
NETHERFIELD INCREASE THE GAP AT THE TOP
By Gerry Wolstenholme
Even though there was a delayed start at Parkside on Saturday, Netherfield still won and thus increased their lead at the top of the table as nearest challengers Fleetwood lost and Darwen and Morecambe could only manage draws, both in rain ruined contests.
Preston batted first at Netherfield and Pervez Shah made 64 and Raouf Akbar 24 as they were bowled out for 163 with Marc Hadwin taking 5-29 and there were two wickets each for Scott Clement and Dale Benkenstein. Craig Walmsley, a top score of 53, and Chris Parry, 32, gave Netherfield a steady start although both were missed early in their innings. Grahame Clarke came in to finish the game with a typically breezy 36 not out as Netherfield reached 166-4 to win by six wickets.
Fleetwood put Kendal in to bat and then suffered as Terry Hunte made 101 not out and Ikram Ullah made 45 as Kendal reached 236 all out with Doug Marillier, who took the final four wickets with the last four balls of the innings, taking 6-69. His performance was matched by Kabir Khan, who bowling unchanged, took 6-84 as Fleetwood were bowled out for 179 to lose by 57 runs. Marillier made 31 and James Ellis 30 otherwise only John Whalley, 27, passed 20.
Darwen's game at Stanley Park was severely curtailed by rain and constant interruptions meant that Darwen made just 114-7 with Gary Jackson making 26 and Chris Lowe 23. Blackpool lost early wickets cheaply and were 2-3, 28-6 and 49-7 but the loss of two of the final 20 overs due to rain cost Darwen dearly as Blackpool finished on a perilous 91-9 with Tim Barry making 30 and Michael Taylor 24.
Barrow had their second win of the season as they comfortably disposed of lack lustre Leyland. Batting first Barrow made 172 with five batsmen getting into the 20s, Todd Bamber's 29 being the best with the others being James Riley, 26, Robin Adams, 25, Ray Mowat, 20, and Ian Allington, 20. Rawl Lewis who took 5-35 and Daryl Wearing who had 4-32 then shot out Leyland for just 67. Steve Pallet's 21 was the best for Leyland for whom Moin-ul-Atiq made the other double figure score of 18. But it was defeat by 105 runs for the visitors.
Atif Ashraf was once again in the runs for Leyland Motors who made 154-6 but in a rain ruined game Morecambe could only reply with 81-5 so the game was drawn. And there was no play at all at Lune Road where the heavens opened shortly before play was due to start and that was that!

ACTION REPLAY:
HUNTE THE MASTER
Kendal 236, Fleetwood 179
By Gerry Wolstenholme
Terry Hunte held sway over the Fleetwood bowling at Broadwater on Saturday as, saying before the game that he would make a century and dedicate it to the late Linda Wolstenholme, he was true to his word and made 101 not out as Kendal made an impressive 236. Fleetwood in reply could not get going and wickets fell regularly as no batsman really mastered the bowling of Kabir Khan who bowled unchanged as Fleetwood were dismissed for 179 to lose by 57 runs.
John Wright won the toss and put Kendal in to bat on a track that looked more likely to suit batsmen than bowlers. And so it proved early on as Ikram Ullah and the more sedate Gareth Ashburner put on an opening partnership of 64. Ullah, playing some shots typical of the sub-continent, had his moments of luck early on when he edged Tom Blundell between wicketkeeper and slip when he had scored seven and got away similarly when he made 11. He was not so lucky when he had reached 45 from 76 balls with eight fours for Marillier at slip held onto a catch off Dave Fish and Kendal were 64-1.
Ashburner had 18 of the 80 runs on the board when he was second out as Marillier bowled him and at 88 Khan went walkabout after playing and missing at Marillier and Ellis smartly stumped him for three. Hunte and Adrian Raynor then added 65 runs for the fourth wicket with Hunte making most of the running. But Raynor had contributed a more than useful 16 when he edged Clinning to Ellis and that was 153-4.
Dave Fallows played only the way he can and attacked from the start but he had a lucky escape before he had scored when Adam Sharrocks at deep square leg put down a straightforward chance. Fallows profited from the miss and went on to make an energetic 28 before Fish trapped him leg before wicket at 153-4. Thereafter most of the runs came from Hunte who garnered the strike to perfection. Phil Ellwood, two, helped him to take the total to 206 before Fish bowled him and then 30 more runs were added as Hunte reached his century in the final over and celebrated with a delightful and touching flourish. His 101 not out came from only 104 balls and contained three sixes and eight fours.
With four balls remaining Kendal were 236-6 and Marillier had 2-69 from his 18.2 overs but he finished in style as he took the final four wickets with his final four balls. Ellis stumped Daniel George for four off the third ball, from the fourth, late and gallant replacement George 'Podge' Barnfather, was also stumped as he swung in trying to make late runs, Marillier bowed James Rafferty from the fifth and Chris Miller struck the final ball to Rob Clark at square leg and Kendal were all out for 236 with Marillier finishing with 6-69. Fish gave him good support with 3-30 while Clinning had 1-16 from three overs as Steve Hill, surprisingly not brought back into the attack after an impressive opening spell of 10-4-16-0, and Tom Blundell, an out of character 0-57 from 10 overs, went wicketless.
Michael Dewhurst was an early loss when Fleetwood replied as he chased a wide ball from Khan and Ullah took a good diving catch behind the wicket as Dewhurst went for all four runs that were on the board. John Whalley, 27 from 56 balls but with six fours, and Clinning, 17, then put on 52 runs in 36 minutes to give Fleetwood hope of victory but Khan dismissed them both in the space of 12 runs. He knocked back Whalley's leg stump when the batsman played a head-in-the-air drive at 56-2 and at 68-3 Ullah took his second catch as Clinning edged behind.
An unusually sedate Marillier, who was dropped at slip by Fallows when he had made only eight, and Wright took Fleetwood to the century mark but without further addition Wright, four, fell leg before wicket to Raynor and 10 runs later Marillier was out. Having faced 64 balls for his 31, and unusually for him hit no boundaries, he played a loose shot at Khan and Rafferty at mid-wicket took the simplest of catches.
Clark, 13, and Sharrocks, 17, ran swiftly between the wickets and while they were together Fleetwood hope still remained as it did when Ellis replaced Clark who presented Ullah with his third catch, this time off Rafferty at 131-6. And Ullah was in the action again as he caught Sharrocks off off-spinner Chris Miller, who had been brought into the attack to complete an over from the injured Rafferty, and that was 151-7. Tom Blundell failed to score as Khan knocked out his off stump at 164-8 and Ellis scored most of the remaining runs as he reached 30 from 50 balls with six fours before he was ninth out at 164 when he edged Raynor to slip where the injured and tumbling Barnfather dramatically pushed up the ball for Fallows to complete the catch.
It was just left for Khan to wrap the innings up as he trapped Fish leg before wicket for one and with Hill not out nought Fleetwood were all out for 179 to lose by 57 runs with 16 balls of the final 20 overs remaining. Khan bowled unchanged for 26.2 overs and had figures of 6-84, marred slightly by the fact that he was responsible for 14 of the 21 no balls that contributed to Fleetwood's top score of 35 extras!
