Match Day 2nd August- 2003

DEFINITE RESULTS IN ALL GAMES - BUT IT'S STILL DARWEN AND ST ANNES IN FRONT

By Gerry Wolstenholme

All games in the last round finished with wins for one side or the other and wins for Darwen and St Annes meant that they still headed the table. However a defeat for Morecambe and wins for Kendal, Preston and Netherfield meant quite a change in the chasing pack. There are now just eight points between second-placed St Annes and fifth-placed Netherfield.

Batting of the day undoubtedly came from Kendal's stand-in professional Janniser Khan who made a superb 120 not out in his side's 219-5 against toiling Leyland Motors. In reply only Asif Ashraf, with 49 not out, made any headway as Motors fell to 102 all out and defeat by 117 runs. Khan added 2-15 to his century, Richard Ellwood took 3-6 and Kevin Howarth took 3-31.

Leaders Darwen meanwhile made short shrift of hapless Fleetwood who could manage only a paltry 128-8 from their full allocation of 57 overs. Skipper Michael Clinning with 34 was the top scorer as Keith Semple took 4-35. Darwen's reply was a low-key affair as they strolled to 129-4 to win by six wickets.

St Annes did themselves a big favour by defeating title-chasing rivals Morecambe quite comfortably at Woodhill Lane. The home side had passed the half-century without losing a wicket but once Mark Woodhead, 29, and Phil Dennison, 36, were out they collapsed to make only 117 with Geoff Love taking 7-31 from 15.1 overs. Gareth Evans led the St Annes reply as he made 54 with five fours as the visitors knocked off the runs for the loss of three wickets. Love added 31 not out to his bowling haul.

Preston had the biggest victory of the day, winning by 119 runs as they totalled 220-8 with Raouf Akbar making a top score of 79 and Ian McDonnell an accomplished 37. Paul Haydock was the bet of the bowlers taking 4-75. Rhys Williams then showed his potential with the ball and his 5-20 helped considerably to bowl Leyland out for just 101 with Charlie Williams on 25 making the top score. Manoj Parekh continued his good form with 3-24.

Lancaster just shaded the Leyland score as Netherfield's Phil Hartley took 6-39 to help dismiss them for 109 and it was only 42 from Brendan Hetherington that enabled them to reach such dizzy heights. Renier Munnik's 15 was the best of the rest. It was not a problem to Netherfield, however, as Grahame Clarke made 50 from 37 balls with four sixes and four fours in their reply of 110-2 that gave them an eight-wicket victory and kept them in with a chance of capturing the title.

Finally Blackpool were beaten at Chorley where Deon Kruis' best NPL effort of the season to date, 48, was the only significant contribution to an all-out total of just 106. This was quite an improvement from the start when it was 3-4 with all three runs being extras. Stephen John returned to top form with 6-22 and Billy Smith took the other four wickets at a cost of 21 runs. The other Smith brother in the side, Tommy, then made 42 as Chorley cruised to 107-4 to win by six wickets.

ACTION REPLAY:

DARWEN WIN IN A CANTER

Fleetwood 128-8, Darwen 129-4

By Gerry Wolstenholme

It was a very one-sided game at Broadwater on Saturday as League leaders Darwen comfortably defeated hapless Fleetwood after putting them in to bat. Fleetwood never really got out of first gear and even when the wickets were not falling, the scoring rate was palpably slow and in the end they managed just 128-8 from the full quota of 57 overs. Darwen's reply was sedately paced, even so there were still 16 overs and three balls remaining when they reached their victory target of 129-4.

Fleetwood lost their customary early wicket when Keith Semple bowled John Hall for one in the second over. There followed a partnership of 55 by Michael Clinning and Lloyd Ferreira who never really took control of the bowling so it was hard work building the total. When Ferreira had made30 he was caught by Chris Lowe at mid-off from the bowling of Gareth Cordingley who then took the third wicket to fall when he had Clinning, 34 from 88 balls with three fours, caught behind by Graham Parkinson at 71-3.

The score limped along to 99 before four wickets fell for seven runs. John Wright was caught behind by Parkinson off Semple for 20, Zac Taylor, 14, fell leg before wicket to the same bowler, Andy Singleton, three, was run out by a throw from Stuart Grant and Semple caught and bowled James Ellis for nought. And that was 106-7. That the final total reached 128 was due to 14 from Wayne Clarke, who was then caught and bowled by Andrew Mercer, and eight not out from Tom Blundell.

Semple had 4-35 from 17 overs, Gareth Cordingley 2-31 and Mercer 1-41 and they had done the job for Darwen for 128 was never going to be enough to win the game.

And so it proved even though Gary Jackson was an early wicket to fall when Steve Hill bowled him for one at 12-1. Mark Hadfield hit 34 good runs and then went for one shot too many without getting into position and he was caught behind by Ellis off Blundell at 55-2.

Semple, 32, hit one huge six and was then superbly caught on the boundary by a diving Wright off Taylor and although John Cordingley fell leg before wicket to Hill for five, there was no danger. Gareth Cordingley made a cultured 32 not out and Jeff Hacking, who earlier had dropped a caught and bowled chance off Clinning, hit 18 runs from 10 balls to seal the Darwen victory at 129-4.
