Match Day 21st June 2003

DARWEN MOVE BACK TO THE TOP

By Gerry Wolstenholme

While only Morecambe of the chasing pack could pull off a win, Darwen moved back to the top of the table with a convincing seven-wicket victory over Blackpool at Stanley Park. But it is still tight at the top as only 13 points separate the top six clubs.

Darwen comfortably disposed of Blackpool who could only manage 161-7 from their 57 overs with Steven Croft making 83 and Mark Lomas being next best with a somewhat painstaking 35. Darwen were then in a certain amount of trouble at 18-3 but Gareth Cordingley, Blackpool's nemesis, and Chris Lowe added 146 runs to take their side to victory by seven wickets. Cordingley finished with 83 not out and Lowe 59 not out.

Man of the day must once again have been Leyland Motors professional Asif Ashraf who scored 129 not out, with 19 fours and two sixes, from his side's total of 220-7, a slight falling off from last week as this time he only contributed 58.63% of the total as against last week's 71.82%! Well done Asif who was assisted by 35 from Hanif Patel. Once again Ashraf did not end up on the winning side as Fleetwood held on at 189-7 with Zac Taylor making 52, John Wright 43 and Iqbal 'Dennis' Liley taking 4-51. It was Paul Hague, 31 not out, youngster Tom Blundell, 22 not out, who defied the Motors' bowlers being unbeaten for the eighth wicket.

Morecambe's six-wicket win came against Netherfield who batted first and could only muster 164-9 with Gareth White's 41 the best effort followed by 29 from Pieter Strydom. Ramesh Powar took 5-44 for Morecambe. Mark Woodhead made a sparkling 75 with 13 fours and Phil Dennison contributed 48 to Morecambe's reply of 166-4.

It was a thriller at Shap Road where St Annes made 213-9 with Geoff Love scoring 81 not out, from 140 balls with three sixes and four fours, and Adrian Darlington making 55 from 65 balls with eight fours. Kevin Howarth was the pick of the Kendal bowlers with 5-56. In reply Kendal reached 171-2 with 10 overs remaining but, due mainly to some super bowling from , they failed to reach their target, finishing two runs short at 212-8. Terry Hunte led the way with 80 off 101 balls including nine fours and two sixes while Dave Fallows made 55. Of the rest only opener Simon Little with 26 got past the teens! Love finished with a good all-round day, taking 5-64.

The Chorley versus Preston game was rained off without 20 overs of the second innings being bowled so both sides took four points. Chorley had posted an impressive 211-7 with Neil Senior making 55 and Jack Catterall 51 while Rhys Williams took 3-39 and Raouf Akbar 3-61. Preston's reply had reached 59-3 when the rains came and play ended.

It was nearly a similar scenario at Fox Lane where Lancaster had made 84-2 from 30 overs in reply to Leyland's 168 all out, a total that had extras and Z Patel top scoring with 33 each. Graham Barnes took 5-66 and then had to watch team-mates David Heywood, 35 not out, and Renier Munnik, 37 not out, be frustrated by the rain.

ACTION REPLAY:

DARWEN EASILY OVERCOME BLACKPOOL

By Gerry Wolstenholme

Darwen, after a wobbly start, comfortably defeated Blackpool at Stanley Park on Saturday as they reached 164-3 for a seven-wicket victory after Blackpool could only manage a modest 161-7 from their 57 overs.

Blackpool began in an all-too-familiar fashion as they were 0-1 after the first ball of the game when Andrew Mercer bowled John Caunce off an inside edge. Worse was to follow as in the second over Keith Semple had Chris Simcock leg before wicket, also for nought, and it was 4-2. Steven Croft and Mark Lomas then set about the rebuilding exercise but it was not easy as the Darwen bowlers kept a tight line and length and were backed up by some astute field placing.

Croft did the bulk of the scoring while Lomas kept the other end alive with the occasional flurry of shots. They had added 83 runs when Lomas could only offer a return catch to John Cordingley and he was gone for 35 made from 106 balls with three fours. Deon Kruis had made three when he despatched the first of two loose balls, a full toss, from John Cordingley down to the long-off boundary. The second, a long hop, followed immediately and Kruis obligingly hit it straight to the waiting Stuart Grant at point and it was 109-4.

Paul Danson made four before Andrew Mercer rearranged his stumps at 130-5 and then two wickets fell with the total on 144. Firstly Steve Mercer, having made a quick 10 and looked the most urgent of the batsmen, drove Andrew Mercer to mid-off where Semple took the catch. Then Croft, 83 from 145 balls with seven fours, was turned by Semple, got a leading edge and gave the bowler a gentle return catch.

There was just time for Darron Walton and Martin Hackett to scamper eight runs each and the innings was over at 161-7 with Andrew Mercer taking 3-36, Semple 2-44 and John Cordingley 2-29.

Darwen's reply began in similar fashion to that of Blackpool as the in-form Gary Jackson returned to the pavilion without a run on the board. He failed to move his feet when flashing at a wide ball from Kruis and Hackett behind the stumps gratefully accepted the catch. Mark Hadfield, three, went in similar fashion to a ball a little closer to his body and when Semple, 14 with three delightfully struck boundaries, was well held at slip by Danson off Kruis, Darwen were in trouble at 18-3.

The lightest of all rain showers took the players off the field for a few minutes only to return with the rain just a little heavier! But it all made no difference to Gareth Cordingley, often the scourge of Blackpool bowlers over the years, and Chris Lowe as the pair made hay against some ordinary looking Blackpool bowling. Dave Higham wheeled away for 17 overs for 50 runs and although there were some late changes with Danson and Ross Parker getting a bowl at the death when they had nothing to gain and everything to lose, nothing troubled the Darwen batsmen.

Gareth Cordingley finished on 81 not out from 129 balls with 10 fours, and when Lowe hit the winning boundary he had scored 59 not out from 115 balls with five fours and both were helped by some haphazard fielding by Blackpool and a performance that lacked any sparkle whatsoever. The 164-3 came with five overs to spare and the 12 points put Darwen back at the top of the table while Blackpool consolidated their position at the bottom.
