Match Day 27th July 2002

DARWEN AND MORECAMBE PULL AWAY

By Gerry Wolstenholme

Wins for Darwen and Morecambe and a draw for nearest rivals Netherfield meant that the top two eased away from the rest at the head of the Northern Premier League table following the last round of results.

Darwen comfortably accounted for lack-lustre Fleetwood at Broadwater. Batting first, the leaders made 211 with the Cordingley brothers, John 50 and Gareth 48, leading the way. Gulam Bodi took 5-76 for Fleetwood in 17 overs. The Fleetwood reply never really got off the starting blocks as, after 18 for the first wicket, nine wickets were down for 50 runs. A partial, although meaningless in the context of the game, recovery saw them reach 89 all out to suffer defeat by 122 runs. Andrew Mercer kept up his phenomenal form with 6-44.

Morecambe meanwhile gathered in 12 points courtesy of a six-wicket win over St Annes who batted first. They made a reasonable 188-8 with Geoff Love back among the runs with 75 not out and Adrian Darlington making 46. But Ramesh Powar replied with 111 not out from Morecambe's winning 191-4.

Netherfield however could not get the better of Lancaster. They batted first at Parkside and made 155 as Ben Simm, 5-26, and Simon Gould, 4-30, ran through the batting. But determined bowling prevented Lancaster from achieving their target and Marc Hadwin's 4-40 was instrumental in keeping Lancaster to 131-8. So Netherfield took seven points to Lancaster's four.

Other winners on the day were Blackpool, Preston and Kendal. The last named closed the gap on third-placed Netherfield with 15 points at the expense of Leyland Motors. Kendal's 219-8 declared was always going to be too many for Motors who could not quite make a century, being 99 all out. In-form Kevin Howarth made 93 and Simon Little 46 for Kendal while it was good to see David Makinson taking 4-48 as his side lost by 120 runs.

Preston polished off Leyland at Fox Lane where Rudra Singh made 49 for the visitors and Pieter Koortzen took 5-69 for the home side. The result was Preston making 193-9 in their 57 overs. Leyland's reply was a worthy one with Andrew Gill top scoring with 40 but the wily Manoj Parekh, 5-53, and the speedy Raoul Akbar, 4-51, bowled them out for 176, 17 runs short of their target.

Finally Blackpool won a rather low-key game at Windsor Park. They made 124 all out thanks mainly to runs from the lower order. Stephen John took 5-57 and Mark Griffiths made 25 before Chorley were bowled out for just 87, the third total of less than 100 on the day. Neil Senior remained to the last but no-one could stay with him as David Brookes, Marcus Sharp and Oliver Newby took three wickets each.

DARWEN DESTROY FLEETWOOD

Darwen 211 Fleetwood 89

By Gerry Wolstenholme

League leaders Darwen steamrollered Fleetwood at Broadwater on Saturday when they won by a massive 122 runs. Having been asked to bat first, Darwen rattled up 211 all out in their 57 overs and in reply Fleetwood made a paltry 89.

Darwen's innings was built mainly around the Cordingleys, 48 from Gareth and 50 from John but four other batsmen made useful contributions. Openers Mark Hadfield, 19 and Chris Lowe, 25, put on 24 before Steve Hill bowled the former. Keith Semple missed out, making only two before offering no stroke to a ball from Dave Fish and being given out leg before wicket.
Lowe, nearly run out three times previously finally succeeded when he failed to beat a direct hit from Mark Wilkinson and Darwen were 72-3. Gareth Cordingley, who ominously crashed his first ball through extra cover for a glorious four, and young Stuart Grant then put on 53 for the fourth wicket. But at this point three wickets fell.

Grant, 25, was the first to go when he was stumped by Lee Jones off Gulam Bodi, then two wickets fell in two balls. Cordingley, 48 from 80 balls with seven fours, was also stumped by Jones off Zac Taylor and then next ball Andrew Mercer was clean bowled. Dominic Heys prevented the hat-trick but did not last much longer as, on one, he was leg before wicket to Bodi. John Cordingley and skipper Jeff Hacking advanced the total to 168 when once again two wickets fell in two balls Hacking, 20, was caught behind off Bodi and Michael Horsfield put a simple catch to Michael Dewhurst at short extra cover.Jamie Nicol not only survived the hat-trick he then featured in an entertaining last wicket stand of 43. He made only one not out while John Cordingley crashed the Fleetwood bowlers to all parts of the ground. He had scored 50 from 42 balls with three sixes and four fours when he holed out off the final ball of the innings, caught at long-on by Hill off Bodi who returned 5-76 in Darwen's all out 211.

The Fleetwood innings began in most unusual fashion as Dewhurst outscored John Wright. The pair had 18 on the board before disaster struck. And it struck hard as nine wickets went down for the addition of only 32 runs. Wright was leg before wicket to Mercer for five, Dewhurst was leg before wicket to Semple for 13 and when Michael Clinning was bowled by Mercer for one, Fleetwood were on the back foot at 19-3.

Steve Whiteside made four before Mercer clean bowled him and then the two bowlers combined to dismiss Bodi, caught Semple at slip off Mercer for two and Fleetwood were in a sorry state at 28-5. Alex Laird failed to score before he fell to a very good slip catch by Mercer off Semple and Mark Wilkinson, four, clubbed a catch to Heys off Semple at 42-7. The eighth and ninth wickets fell to successive balls with the total at 50 as Zac Taylor was bowled by Mercer for four and Dave Fish was leg before wicket next ball.

Steve Hill survived the hat-trick and he and Lee Jones provided the most entertaining and certainly the most productive stand of the innings. They put on 39 with Hill firing a career-best 25 not out from only 18 balls with five well struck fours and Jones making 15 before he gave Gareth Cordingley a gentle return catch in his first over. The innings was over for 89 and Darwen had won by 122 runs.
Andrew Mercer took his season's haul to 58 wickets with figures of 15-6-44-6, suffering most from the flashing blade of Hill, while Semple had 3-40 and Gareth Cordingley 1-0.
