Junior League Secrestary's Report Season 1993
Another season has again flown by and I'm afraid as far as the Inter-League silverware is concerned the Junior department of the Northern League has been unable to imitate their senior colleagues.
We again suffered elimination in the first round of the Manchester Evening News Competition against our bogey team the Ribblesdale League.
I am pleased to report, however, that we managed to reverse this result in what turned out to be the ultimate game of the Inter-League North West Colts Competition.
Victories over the South Manchester League and the Glossop and District League kept us on course for yet another appearance in the North West Colts Semi-Final but an unexpected defeat on a very wet day in Lancaster against the eventual winners, Liverpool Competition, the 1993 Inter-League Under 18 season was brought to an early close.
The Under 15 Inter-League season was even shorter, in fact it was limited to one game against Salford Youth Cricket Association.
Better things are hoped for in 1994
The Junior League was fairly successful, but unfortunately three of our clubs were unable to take part, and several games did not take place for other reasons than the weather.
The League Championship was carried off in style by Leyland DAF with St Annes coming a close second.
The Premiership was competed for between these two clubs and Netherfield and Chorley with the initial pair coming out on top.
The Final took place in front of a big crowd at Leyland DAF on the 5th September with St Annes winning a well contested game for the second consecutive year by 16 runs.
St Annes are also to be congratulated on their success in coming Runners-up in the National Final of the Sun Life of Canada Under 15 Club Championship, which is no mean feat.
I must not fail to mention two other games that took place for the first time in 1993. An Under 17 eleven took on the Lancashire Under 16 team at St Annes but it was disappointingly rained off when the League were in a very strong position.
It was agreed that this game will be an annual affair.
At Atherton C C, the Northern League Under 25 XI played the Bolton Association Under 25's and I am very pleased to report that we were far to strong for their highly rated team.
I will close by thanking all those people who helped to make 1993 so successful.
Blackpool Cricket Club, St Annes and Lancaster are to be thanked for hosting the Inter-League games.
Richard Hadwin and the League Executive for their support and of course all the umpires, scorers, caterers,Groundsmen and parents for their hard work and dedication to the cause.
I look forward to 1994 with relish. Unfortunately it looks a long way away from where I am sitting at this moment as it has just started snowing heavily
