Kellett's men reach last 16 of Lancashire Cup
St Annes had a mixed afternoon, making progress in the Barclays Wealth Lancashire Knock-Out competition but bowing out of the ECB National Club Championship.
Fixture congestion unfortunately forced St Annes to fulfil both important fixtures on the same afternoon and they elected to field their strongest side against Cheetham Hill in the Lancashire Knock-Out at Vernon Road.
The visitors were all out for 192 in the penultimate over of their 45-overs innings, captain I Mirza top-scoring with 39. For St Annes Atiq Uz-Zaman, pressed into service with his occasional off-spin, bowled superbly to take three wickets while Ben Willis took a further two. Duncan Whalley collected two catches and two smart stumpings and to complete a tidy fielding performance the home side claimed two run outs.

When the prolific Atiq was caught at backward point to leave St Annes 15 for one the visitors were jubilant. But St Annes skipper Andy Kellett and professional Dinuka Hettiarachchi then combined in a match-winning partnership that took the game away from Cheetham Hill's grasp.
Matching one another virtually run for run the pair batted superbly and victory was within grasp when Hettiarachchi was caught for 80 after a second wicket stand of 166 in 32 overs.
Kellett went on to finish 82 not out and Stephen Twist's late flurry (13 not out) saw St Annes over the finishing line with 6.2 overs in hand.
St Annes are now through to the last 16 of this competition and will travel to meet Bolton League side Egerton on Sunday 5 July.
Egerton defeated Morecambe at Woodhill Lane, recovering from being 50 for 5 after 28 overs to post 167 for 8 in their 45 overs. Morecambe looked well placed at 80 for one after Mark Woodhead (40) and Gert Maartens (30) gave them a platform.
But the home side lost their last nine wickets for 46 runs and were bowled out for 126 to crash out of the competition.
The Furness Building Society Northern Premier League's other representatives in the last sixteen are Netherfield who are at home to the winners of the tie between New Brighton and Hindley St Peter's.

In the ECB National Club Championship Carnforth romped to a ten-wicket win over a St Annes side comprising second and third team players.
Played at Back Lane, Warton St Annes struggled to 44 all out in 17 overs as professional Gareth Pedder took 3 for 13 in his eight overs and Robert Parker collected his first five wicket haul in first-team cricket. Parker finished with 5 for 21 as youngsters Bradley Hoyle and Joe Gibson each took a wicket apiece.
Carnforth skipper Darren Moore hit an undefeated 35 that included five fours and two sixes as his side romped to victory in just four overs without losing a wicket.

20/20 Competition
On Friday last Carnforth opened their Furness Building Society Northern Premier League Twenty20 campaign with a thrilling five runs victory over Lancaster at Lodge Quarry.
Ryan Nelson (57) and skipper Darren Moore (54) each hit classy half centuries in Carnforth's imposing total of 174 for 4, professional Gareth Pedder adding a quick-fire 23.
Opener Michael Stevens provided the backbone of Lancaster's reply and batted through the innings for a superb 89 not out that included seven fours and three sixes. But Lancaster finished just short as they closed on 169 for 5.
The Twenty20 competition continues this Tuesday (9 June) when Leyland are at home to Chorley and Fleetwood are at home to St Annes. On Friday 12 June Barrow are at home to Kendal and Carnforth host Morecambe. All games start at 6pm.
Other News
Elsewhere Blackpool professional Saj Weerakoon took 7 for 44 but finished on the losing side as a deputy professional in the Lancashire League. Weerakoon's Todmorden side bowled out Burnley for 138 but were then dismissed for 88 in reply, Weerakoon out for 10.
Incidentally Unsworth professional Wayne Madsen, who has played in the Northern League in recent seasons as a substitute professional took 9 for 54 and hit 72 as sub-pro for Church against Haslingden.
Next Sunday Carnforth are at home to Leyland in the Semi-Final of the ECB National Club Championship Group Three while Chorley entertain Lytham.
