Consolation derby win for holders NetherfieldHolders

Netherfield pro Ben Laughlin bowls to Jon Miles

NetherfieldHolders Netherfield gained some consolation from losing out on a place on Finals Day in the Jamie Heywood Twenty20 sponsored by Latham Baxendale with victory in the Kendal derby.

Kendal had already assured their place in the last four by virtue of winning their first three games in North One group but they were decidedly second best on a beautiful summer's evening at Parkside Road.

Stuart Nixon struck the decisive early blow, bowling the in-form Kiwi Test star Jamie How for 7 and Terry Hunte was caught at midwicket by Marc Brown off Nathan Chambers for 8 to leave Kendal 29/2.

Gary Baker made 23 before he was brilliantly stumped by Shane Dixon off Marc Hadwin and when Cumberland opener Jon Miles was caught by Brown off Hadwin Kendal had slumped to 65/4.

Despite a fighting 20 from skipper Chris Miller Kendal were bowled out for 112 off the final ball of their innings.

John Mason applied pressure to the middle and late order to take 3/23; with Nixon and Hadwin each taking 2/21.

Although they lost openers Ben Haddrick and Dixon early in their reply Netherfield cruised to victory by seven wickets with 33 balls to spare.

Alex Atkinson hit a classy 33 off only 23 balls before he was bowled by Miller.

Brown then took command and ended the contest with a flurry of perfectly timed attacking shots; hitting three fours and four sixes in an accomplished unbeaten 50 off 36 balls. The Cumberland batsman ended the game with a crisp shot through midwicket off Stu Parkin that brought up his deserved half century.
