Leyland Presentation Evening

Leyland's First and Second XIs were Northern League champions

Luis Reece is Player of the Season

Leyland Cricket Club players, officials, members and supporters celebrated a season of unprecedented success at their Presentation Evening held at the David Lloyd Health & Fitness Centre, Whittle-le-Woods on Saturday.

A glittering, all-ticket event featured the presentation of the Furness Building Society Northern Premier League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) championship trophies to David Makinson, captain of the First XI, and Chris Dovey, Second XI captain, by League chairman Norman Poole.

Leyland's Third and Fourth XIs also won the championship of their respective divisions in the Palace Shield while Leyland's two Sunday XIs completed a remarkable six-hit by lifting their respective titles in the West Lancashire League.

Club chairman David Rees and his wife Cath, Vice-chair Jo Cummings and husband Tommy and long-serving former club chairman Terry Wilson completed the top table alongside Chris Maguire, editor of the Chorley & Leyland Guardian who was guest speaker.

"For a lot of reasons it was the happiest season of my career and just about the best achievement in winning the league," said David Makinson. "We had a great team spirit which runs throughout the club. Leyland really is just like one, big happy family and we had tremendous support from players' families and other members of the club".

"It's a really good league to play in with a depth of talent throughout the teams and some great young players coming through. To win the championship was a special moment in what was a momentous year for the Leyland club."

Club professional Brett Pelser sent a message from South Africa where he is currently captaining North West and said he was counting down the days to the start of the new Northern League season.
