Leyland celebrate the key dismissal of Netherfield pro Nick Kruger |
Barrow moved into second place in the Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) by completing a six wickets win over Lancashire Colts at Ernest Pass.
Daryl Wearing's side were without Jon Miles, Greg Platten and Graham Dawson on county duty though Darren Clark returned but completed a successful weekend with their second 12-points haul in as many days.
The Colts were bowled out for 191 with Barrow pro Pasan Wanasinghe, the league's leading wicket-taker this season taking four for 35 off 14 overs. The Sri Lankan now had 42 league wickets. Abui Arumagam top-scored for the Colts with 47 off 48 balls and Levi Wolfenden hit 40 with Tom Bailey making 31. Wearing and Liam Livingstone each took two wickets for Barrow who earned six extra overs to reach their target.
Clark made a patient 42 off 99 balls opening the innings, Wanasinghe 36, Livingstone 27 and Chris D'Leny saw Barrow home with a classy unbeaten 48 off 47 balls. The Colts made Barrow work hard for their runs and victory was only achieved with 2.5 overs to spare.

In the Readers Cup Division One cup holders Netherfield travelled to Fox Lane to take on table-topping Leyland and went out the competition after a seven wickets defeat. Without the unavailable Alex Atkinson and Craig Walmsley and with Chris Parry nursing a broken finger, Netherfield's hopes virtually disappeared when pro Nick Kruger was caught by Luis Reece off a leading edge for 7.
John Huck battled hard to make 36 off 56 balls but Netherfield's total of 130 never looked enough. Reece completed a successful weekend, following up his match-winning 111 not out against Preston with an unbeaten 71, sharing an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 83 with Karl Cross (30 not out).
Andrew Makinson took three for 24 in Leyland's Readers Cup win |
In the derby at Broadwater Fleetwood entertained St Annes and earned the shock result of the day with a victory by 155 runs. Mark Wilkinson hit 56 off 53 balls in the middle order and more fireworks came at the end with Ryan Smith blasting an unbeaten 85 off 51 balls with six sixes and six fours. Smith shared in an unbroken eighth wicket stand of 127 with Tom Wilson (33 not out) as Fleetwood reached 252 for 7.
Sam Bell then removed St Annes openers Atiq Uz-Zaman and captain Andy Kellett quickly and Smith completed a fine all round game with three for 13 as St Annes crumbled to 97 all out. Wilson and Wilkinson also took two wickets apiece.
Chorley's team stayed overnight in Kendal prior to playing their tie at Shap Road after their Saturday league engagement at Barrow. But they ran into a Terry Hunte masterclass as the Kendal legend blasted 123 off 84 balls in his side's imposing 254 for 5. Hunte hit 17 fours and three sixes and added 137 for the fourth wicket with teenager Nick Phillips, who made a valuable 48 off 67 balls. Jim Lee took three for 48 for Chorley.
Stu Parkin grabbed the prize wicket of Chorley pro JJ Smuts, caught by Gary Baker for 5 and despite battling efforts from stand-in opener Kieran McCullagh (32 off 24 balls), James Reynard (55 off 77 balls) and Will Moulton (38 off 33 balls) Chorley were dismissed for 219, Parkin and Nick Phillips each taking three wickets.
Blackpool were at home to Carnforth at Stanley Park and recorded an eight wickets win with opener Alex Smith anchoring the reply to the visitors' 171 for 7 with an unbeaten 60 off 75 balls. Andy Furniss (43) and pro Nimesh Perera, who was unbeaten on 55 off 46 balls at the close were also in the runs. Lewis Bradley was Carnforth's top scorer with 42 as Furniss took three for 44.
Darwen entertained Preston at Birch Hall without several key players due to injury and with key bowlers Yakub Bhamji and Kamran Anwar sidelined by examinations. But their talented and consistent pro Mohammad Zaman Khan came up trumps again with a superb unbeaten 140 off 121 balls as Darwen reached a challenging 242 for 2. Khan shared an opening stand of 167 in 31 overs with stand-in opener Jordan Clarke who hit an impressive 64 and went on to hit seven sixes and seven fours.
Preston opener Sajid Patel miscues a hook and is about to be caught by Mohammad Zaman Khan |
Preston opener Lukman Vahaluwala made an aggressive 49 but several of the visitors' batsmen got established without going on to make a match-winning score. Michael Douglas grabbed the vital wicket of Preston pro Bilal Asad, caught down the leg-side by Clarke after making 68 while deputy captain Neil Cordingley made a stunning catch to dismiss Jonty McDonald. Despite Ben Harrison's unbeaten 26, Preston finished eight runs short after a superb match, Cordingley and Niall Burke each taking three wickets for Darwen.
